JACOB D. NEUFELD Jacob Dietrich Neufeld, 92, died peacefully with family at his side at Bethania Personal Care Home in Winnipeg on December 24, 2007. His memory will be cherished by Mary, his wife of 66 years and his daughters Ingrid Brown, Helen Anderson, Vera Neufeld, Diane Pyper (Murray Meads) and his grandchildren Ramon (Tina) Brown, James Anderson, Michael (Alisa) Anderson, and great-granddaughters Samantha Stewart and Alyssa Brown. He was predeceased by his parents, Dietrich and Anna, brothers Peter, Gerhard, Dietrich, Hans, Franz, Bernhard and sister Anna. Surviving are brother Willy and sister Justina. He was born August 16, 1915 in NeuChortitza, Ukraine. He married Maria Berg June 8, 1941, in Osterwick, Ukraine, where they both taught school. In 1943 they fled the USSR to Germany where he was inducted, against his will, into the German Army. He spent three years in France as a prisoner of war. In 1949, he, his wife, and daughter Ingrid immigrated to Canada where he worked on his uncles' farms before moving to Winnipeg in 1950. They had three more daughters. In Winnipeg he worked at various factories, including J.B. Carter where he became a foreman. His passions included gardening and music. He remained active by swimming, bowling, curling and playing pool with friends. At 87 he took on the challenge of learning to use a computer and was able to keep in touch with family on-line. In his later years he enjoyed telling stories in Low German. Services will be held at North Kildonan Mennonite Church, 1131 Roch St., Winnipeg on Wednesday, January 2, 2008 at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or Bethania Personal Care Home. The family would like to extend a grateful thank you to the staff and volunteers of Bethania Personal Care Home for the loving care Dad received while a resident.
