EDMUND JAST On the evening of January 1, 2008, with his wife by his side, Edmund quietly passed away at the age of 92 at Holy Family Home. Edmund was born April 11, 1915, in Winnipeg, the middle child in a family of five siblings. His parents William and Veronica Jastrzebski were proprietors of a corner grocery store on Aberdeen Avenue and the family lived behind the store. After completing his schooling, Edmund apprenticed as a butcher and then, with his brother, entered the grocery business. They operated St. James IGA at the corner of Portage Avenue and Whytewold Road for many years. On August 7, 1943, Edmund married Anne Sask and they began their family with the birth of Terese Helen in 1947 and Kathryn Mary (Kate) in 1953. After selling the grocery store, Ed and Anne assisted their daughter in the operation of Terese's Ceramic Studio. Ed was a hard-working, independent and dignified person. He was a gentle man as well as a gentleman. He had a great sense of humour, a knack for languages and the corruption of words, a nickname for everyone he loved and a special way with the girls. Sadly Edmund was predeceased by his daughters Terese in 1981 and Kate in 2004. He was also predeceased by his brother Thadeus (Ted), and sisters Lil Stromsky and Edna Robbie. His memory will be treasured by his wife Anne, sister Stephanie Turney (Victoria, BC), son-in-law Marko Wolf-Pany (Burnaby, BC), sister-in-law Olga Lewicki, several nieces and nephews but especially by Trish Morrison (Nelson, BC), Marilyn Dolenko (Ottawa), Irene Romaniw and Pat Lewicki and their families. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the wonderful staff on St Paul's Ward at Holy Family Home who made Edmund's life as comfortable as possible during the last few years. A special bouquet of love is extended to Christel Biscoff, an angel in disguise for all the kindnesses she bestowed on Ed. Cremation has taken place. A Liturgy commemorating Edmund's life will be celebrated at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Church, 737 Bannerman, Avenue on Saturday, January 12 at 11:30 a.m. with a Basilian Father officiating. Interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers the family would appreciate donations to the Sisters Servants of Mary Immaculate at Holy Family Home, 165 Aberdeen Avenue, Winnipeg, R2W 1T9, or to the St. Nicholas Church Preservation Fund, 737 Bannerman Avenue, R2X 1J9.
