With heavy hearts we regretfully announce the unexpected passing of Marvin Namaka Sr., while surrounded by the love of his family on Sunday, December 30, 2007, at the age of 71. Marvin is lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 45 years Joanie, their children Ivy (Murray) Wilson, Karen (John) Foote, Judy (Glen) Cottick, Marvin (Michelle) and Barry (Valdine); grandchildren Morgan, Nicole, Mark, Connar, Rilee, Holton, Kendra, Brett, Danica and Bryndis; stepmother Nellie Namaka; brothers Walter (Sonia) and Paul (Joyce); in-laws John and Eleanor Lytwyn, Paulette Namaka and Patsy Lytwyn; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by grandson Reid Cottick, parents Nick and Mary, brother Sam and parents-in-law Mary and Panko Lytwyn. Marvin was born in Dauphin on June 5, 1936. He grew up on the family farm and attended Nordheim School to Grade 6. In 1951 his family moved to Winnipegosis where he completed his education. During the summer seasons of 1954 and 1955 Marvin worked at the National Harbours Board in Churchill. In 1956 Marvin became a heavy equipment operator for Baurer Construction working on CNR projects for six years. In the winter of 1959 Marvin acquired his commercial fishing license and operated at North Shore Lake Winnipegosis. On May 5, 1962 Marvin married Joanie Lytwyn. They purchased a small trailer and traveled across Manitoba with Marvin working as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic on the Greater Winnipeg Floodway. In 1968 Marvin purchased a summer commercial fishing license, which he held until 1976. During this time he also began farming and ranching near Winnipegosis. In 1972 Marvin was employed as a Transportation and Maintenance Supervisor for Duck Mountain School Division until his retirement in 1998. Marvin dedicated his entire life to his family, with a special place in his heart for his grandchildren. He also loved gardening, cooking, fishing, hunting, telling stories and jokes. Special thanks are extended to the Emergency staff, Dr. Moon and the surgical team at St. Boniface Hospital for your valiant efforts. Prayers were held on Thursday, January 3 at 7:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint). Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 7 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph's Parish, 250 Jefferson. A 40-day service will be held at the Holy Ascension Ukrainian Catholic Church, Winnipegosis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Marvin to the Reid Cottick Little Heroes Memorial Fund, 15 Norcross Cres., Winnipeg, R3X 1H8.
