ELIZABETH ROSE (BETTY) O'TOOLE (nee McCARTHY) After a lengthy illness, Betty passed away peacefully on January 2, 2008 at Eagle Park Health Care Facility in Qualicum Beach with family at her side. Born October 13, 1925 in Britannia Bay, Ontario, Betty was the youngest of six children and moved to Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1939 where she finished school and entered St. Boniface Nursing School. She graduated in 1946 and worked as a RN in Winnipeg. She met James (Jim) through close friends and married in June 1950. Jim and Betty remained in Winnipeg where Jim was a physician and founding partner of Assiniboine Clinic. They moved to British Columbia in 1984 after Jim retired and settled in Nanoose Bay in 1985. Betty will be dearly missed by Jim and her children, grandchildren and great-grand-children: Kathleen of Toronto; Patrick (Janis), Mike (Tanya, and Connor and Samantha), Neil and Patricia of Kitchener; Peggy (Mike McCarvill), Terri (Bill Dubesky and Will and Brendan), and Mandy of Errington; Maureen (Bob Bennie) of Nanaimo; Tom (Jocelyn, and Jeanna) of Calgary; Rob (Janice, Kaitlin and Megan) of Winnipeg; Theresa (Rod Dickson) of Portadown, Northern Ireland; and Shauna (Steve Bolger, Dylan, Liam and Nicole) of Coombs. Betty will also be missed by her sister Joan Wardrop of Burlington and brother Dennis McCarthy of Winnipeg and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her son Dennis in 1969 and brothers, Jack McCarthy and Charles McCarthy and sister Velma Gillespie. Betty had a wonderful sense of humour and creative wisdom. She loved her family, provided thoughtful guidance and nurtured their independence. She enjoyed spending time at the family cottage at Bird Lake, Manitoba in addition to swimming, sailing, fishing, skiing, playing tennis, sewing and knitting. Jim and the family extend their gratitude and thanks to all the staff at Eagle Park for their kindness and genuine care to Betty over the past eight and a half years. A funeral mass for Betty will be held on January 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at Trinity Catholic Church, 6234 Spartan Road with a reception following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society or charity of choice.
