JAMES MAXWELL BAND Jim Band, entrepreneur, salesman, family man and fisherman, passed away peacefully at Vista Park Lodge on January 4, 2008 aged 83. He leaves three children, Sharon (Larry) and Cynthia White (Ron) of Winnipeg and Martin Band (Lissa) of London, England. Jim was very proud of his five grandchildren, Jeff (Shaughnessy) of Toronto, Karen (Tim) of Calgary, Kyle White of Winnipeg, Alastair and Christopher Band of London and one much-loved great grandchild Benjamin. He also leaves sister in law Eunice Band, wife of beloved brother Roland Harold (deceased in 1990). Many nieces, nephews, their families, and step-grandchildren loved him and will miss him. Jim was born in Kenora, Ontario on July 31, 1924, son of James Harold Martin Band and Francis Tamkin Band. In Kenora he was known as Max. After 23 years working for the T. Eaton Company in Kenora and Winnipeg, Jim founded the House of Teak in 1964, bringing the Scandinavian furniture revolution to Winnipeg. With over 5000 customers from all over Manitoba and the US, the House of Teak was immensely successful for over 30 years. Jim was also an active member of the Rotary Club. Jim loved his cottage at Lake of the Woods, where his children, grandchildren and adopted grandchildren spent many a happy summer. He was a keen fisherman and devoted many a happy hour to finding the big pickerel with long time friends. Jim was married to Theda Band (nee Galaugher) of Winnipeg for 31 years. Theda passed away in 1998. A celebration of Jim's life will be held at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB R3T 5Y4, Wednesday, January 9, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Canada at 10-120 Donald Street Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 4G2 or to a charity of your choice.
