NANCY ELLEN SOBEY (nee SNYDER) December 14, 1956 - January 7, 2008 Peacefully on Monday, January 7, 2008 Nancy Ellen Sobey passed away after a lengthy and courageous battle with cancer at Stonewall Hospital, surrounded by her husband Dick and friends, Carie Jo Martin, Andrea Graham and Pat Kirkwood-Halverson. Nancy is survived by her loving husband Dick and his two daughters, Melissa Neilson, husband Grant and Amanda Chatterpaul, husband Derrick with their two sons, Brydon and Kane; her mother Vivian Snyder; sisters, Donna and Bob McKay, Penny and Ron Smith; brother Ray and Jan and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her dad Alva Snyder. Nancy was born in Winnipeg and resided there with her family until 1973 when the family moved to Thunder Bay, Ontario where she worked for ABITIBI Paper and the City of Thunder Bay. In March of 1997 she moved back to Winnipeg to be with the love of her life Dick Sobey. They later married and together lived in the Stonewall area. Nancy and Dick worked side by side in their business Weiller and Williams. From a very early age Nancy's love for horses and dogs was evident. She had many great four legged friends during her life. She loved the dog show world where she was a true handler and showman. Nancy loved to compete in all aspects of the equine world from showing horses to endurance riding to Polo to jumping. Later in life she discovered her greatest love, barrel racing. Nancy's love of animals was unbelievable, they were her passion. While showing dogs and horses she always had the animals' best interests first in her heart. Nancy was a hard working individual with a heart of gold who would sponsor and help anyone or any cause or association that needed help. She belonged to many associations including The Manitoba Barrel Racing Association, The Saskatchewan Barrel Racing Association, The National Barrel Racing Association, The Manitoba Rodeo Cowboys Association, The Canadian Kennel Club,The Boston Terrier Club of Canada, The Manitoba German Shepherd Club and numerous others. She helped found the Thunder Bay Schutzhund Association and was a cofounder of the Northern Lights Barrel Futurity and Derby Inc. along with the Race for the Cure. This barrel race will now be renamed The Nancy Sobey Memorial Race for the Cure. Entry fees for this race will act as pledges for CancerCare Manitoba. Nancy kept her family and friends close to her heart and she will be forever missed and loved by all who knew her. Memorial service will be held on Tuesday, January 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, Stonewall. Rev. Marilyn Anderson-Corkum will officiate. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, in care of Nancy Sobey Memorial Barrel Race, 675 McDermot Ave., RM 1160, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
