JOHN (JACK) BEATTY ASHBY Quietly and peacefully, John passed away on January 8, 2008 at the West Park Manor, just five days before his 90th birthday. John will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 61 years, Aileen, daughter Diane Cullen (Randy), his grandchildren, Michael Cullen (Tracey), Cathy Cullen-Adams (Jayson), great-grandson, Kole Adams, brother Glen Ashby (Marion), sister Muriel Griggs, and many nieces and nephews. John was born on January 13, 1918 in Emerson, Manitoba to Leonard Howe Ashby and Jean Marion (Bryce). He was predeceased by his stepmother, Hilda (Peto) Ashby, his sister Margaret (Ashby) Long and his brother Bryce Ashby. He began working as a radio operator and station agent at Trans Canada Airlines (now Air Canada) in 1943 and served in the Central and Western divisions. He retired from Air Canada in Winnipeg in 1979. When his health allowed, he looked forward to and enjoyed meeting with friends at the Air Canada Pioneers Retirement Club meetings. Jack had a true green thumb and was very proud of his beautiful garden on Duffield Street in St. James where he and Aileen lived most of their married lives. He also enjoyed working with his hands, and was always fixing, building and improving their home. He loved music, especially big band, and had a big soft spot and warm heart for his furry friends over the years, especially Lucky and Joey . Thank you so much to the nurses, doctors and support staff at West Park Manor who all took such wonderful care of Dad in his last few months. Their loving kindness was so much appreciated by Dad and his family. A service in celebration of John's long and happy life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 18, 2008 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, 3830 Roblin Blvd., Charleswood. In his quiet way, Jack appreciated and loved his family and friends dearly. In lieu of flowers, please be kind and extend your hand to someone who may need help.
