HELEN EDYTHE CRAIG (nee MORTON) 1915 2008 Peacefully in the early morning hours on Thursday, January 10, 2008, Helen Craig passed away at Grace Hospital at the age of 92 years. Remaining to forever cherish Mom's memory are her daughter Mavis and husband Dan Garrioch, daughter Barbara and husband Ron Jankowski, grandchildren Ryan and Christina Garrioch, and Chris (Jackie), Amanda, and Dayna Jankowski. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband Doug in 1989, her father William, mother Ida, and her sister Mavis. She was born May 1, 1915 in Toronto, Ontario and worked as a dietician at the Y , enjoying sailing on Lake Ontario in her leisure time. After her marriage to Doug and the birth of their second daughter, the family moved to Winnipeg and settled in Silver Heights in 1954. Active in curling at Deer Lodge Curling Club, Helen was also on the Women's Auxiliary of the Shriners' Hospital, as well as a volunteer for CancerCare Manitoba. Mom was an avid gardener, a love which she passed on to her daughters, and was also an excellent crib player, winning many tournaments. She had a deep love for the family pets over the years and enjoyed their many antics. Helen loved her many summers spent at the family cottage at Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell, where she enjoyed swimming, fishing and having wonderful barbecue dinners. She loved to sit on the dock with her morning coffee and in the evening, play a mean game of crib on the veranda. In recent years, Helen was a member of the Army, Navy Air Force Veterans in Canada, Assiniboia Unit #283, and with the other members, enjoyed great companionship and many trips to Shooting Star and other casinos in the United States. Mom's greatest joy in life was her family. She had an amazing spirit and a great sense of humour right to the end. In recent years, with failing health, she maintained her optimism every day and her appreciation of life. She was a kind and gentle soul who touched many people and was a remarkable lady, whose strength inspired us all. The family extends their sincere thanks to the nursing staff at Grace Hospital 3 North, for the care and compassion given to Helen. A celebration and remembrance of Helen's life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January, 15, 2008 at Thomson in the Park Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Fort Garry.
