Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGRANT WILCOCK DOMINY 1928 2008 Grant Dominy passed away in Victoria on January 10, 2008 at the age of 79. He will be dearly missed by Rosemary, his devoted wife of 51 years; their two loving children Lynda and David; grandchildren, Rhiannon and Andrew; daughter-in-law Diane, cousins, Lorie, Shirley and Henry, as well as and many relatives and friends. Grant was born in Edmonton on September 3, 1928 and was the only son of Charles and Lilian Dominy. He was a devoted son, excellent athlete and gifted student. Summers were spent working on the Northern Alberta Railroad, making him the 8th consecutive generation of Dominys to ride the rails. He graduated from St. George's School, Vancouver, in 1946. He went on to complete a Bachelor's degree in statistics at the University of Alberta in 1949, followed by 3 years at the University of Chicago where he completed a Masters degree in statistics and an additional year in the doctoral program. In 1953 he moved to Winnipeg and joined the Great West Life Assurance Company where he enjoyed a long and distinguished career of 32 years, retiring in 1987. He met and married the love of his life, Rosemary, in 1956. In 1957 they had their first child, David, followed by the birth of Lynda in 1958. Throughout his life, Grant was known as a decent, generous, thoughtful person who put the interests of others ahead of his own. He was an outstanding leader in the community, contributing to many organizations including: St. Andrews Anglican Church as Sunday school teacher, treasurer and warden; Woodhaven Community League as President and hockey coach; Winnipeg Lawn Tennis Club as President, Treasurer and member for over 30 years; Winnipeg Children's Hospital Research Foundation as President for 7; Chief Civilian Aide to the Rt. Hon. P. McGonigal, Lieutenant Governor of the Province of Manitoba; The Conference Board of Canada as Chairman; the Island Players Chamber Orchestra of Victoria as Chairman; and St. Mary's Anglican Church as member of the finance committee and warden. Grant always led by example and was the embodiment of Sir Winston Churchill's belief that we make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. A celebration of Grant's life will be held at St. Mary's Anglican Church at 1701 Elgin Road in Victoria at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 19, 2008, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, friends who so wish may make memorial donations directly to Victoria Hospice Society, 1510 Fort St., Victoria V8S 5J2.
