Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLILLIAN FLORENCE PICKELL (nee HOWE) August 9, 1915 - January 11, 2008 Peacefully on January 11, 2008 Lillian Florence Pickell , passed away at age 92 at Rosewood Lodge in Stonewall with family by her side. The oldest of three children, Lil was born to William James and Ethel Forrest Howe of Gunton, MB. Shortly after her birth the family moved to Marquette, MB, where her father was the station agent. Lil attended school in Marquette and at St. Mary's Academy in Winnipeg, MB. After high school Lil earned her teaching certificate from Normal School before teaching at Polson, Lake Francis and Rosendale. On September 28, 1940 Lil married A.D. (Cy) Pickell in La Riviere and moved to Guelph, Ontario where Cy completed veterinary college. In the spring of 1941 they moved to Stonewall where she lived until her death. Lil worked with Cy in the office of the Stonewall Veterinary Clinic and together they raised four children. Lil was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star for many years. She also enjoyed many years of dedicated service with the Stonewall United Church UCW and served as a volunteer on numerous community activities. Lil had a great passion and love of the piano and as a youth traveled from Marquette to Winnipeg by train to take lessons and often practiced for five hours a day. Also in her younger years she played the piano at silent movies at Winnipeg Beach and continued sharing her music with family, friends, and the community into her 90's. Lil enjoyed many activities including curling, traveling, playing cards and socializing with family and friends. She also enjoyed knitting and crocheting and all the family have treasured mementos of her handy works. Lil took great pride in her family and shared her magnificent sense of humour with her family and all that knew her. Left to share the love and memories of Lil are her four children, Rex (Joni), Merle (Barry Tomyk), Gary (Beatrice), and Doug (Betty-Lou), nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; sister Edythe Hess; sister-in law Norma Howe and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. Lil was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, Cy, in 1992; brother Bob Howe; brother-in-law Lloyd Hess and Cy's siblings and their spouses. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Stonewall United Church Mission and Service Fund, Stonewall, MB R0C 2Z0, South West District Palliative Care, Box 1282 Stonewall, MB R0C 2Z0 or a charity of one's choice. Friends may call to pay their respects, on Tuesday, January 15 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the MacKenzie Funeral Chapel, 433 Main Street, Stonewall. Funeral Service to celebrate the life of Lillian Florence Pickell will be held on Wednesday, January 16, at 2:00 p.m. at the Stonewall United Church. The family would like to express their thanks to the Lions Club for their excellent service provided to our parents and grand parents during their years at Lions Manor. Thanks to Connie and Frances, Mom was able to live 15 years at the Manor. The family also expresses a special thank-you to the staff at Rosewood Lodge for the excellent care provided to our mother and grandmother. MacKenzie Funeral Home, Stonewall in care of arrangements.
