ALBERT FONTAINE (1914 - 2008) Peacefully on Sunday morning, January 13, 2008, Chief Albert Fontaine, the eldest male member of the Sagkeeng First Nation, passed away with his loving family by his side. Albert will be dearly missed by his daughters; Louise (Dolly) and Shirley (Chips). He is survived by his grandchildren; Daniel (Gina), Jason, Christopher (Del), Sandi (Steve), Derek (Susan), Shawn (Sally), Ian (Sylvia) and Farrell (Ron). Albert was also so proud of his 11 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, as well as many nieces, nephews and friends. Albert was predeceased by his wife Margaret, five children, parents, eight brothers and four sisters. Albert was born on January 3, 1914, in Fort Alexander, Manitoba. He attended the Fort Alexander Indian Residential School. Despite the difficulty of his experience at the school, Albert remained positive and devoted to his community. He and Margaret were married for 60 years and were loving parents to seven children. Albert worked hard throughout his life. As a young man, he worked in various areas such as the paper mill, train conductor, trapper, prospector, hunter, trapper and retired from the Sagkeeng Consolidated School as maintenance engineer. Albert continued to work long after retirement and was always busy helping and being involved in his community. He will be forever remembered as a respected elder. Albert was also active in First Nation politics and was the Chief of the Sagkeeng First Nation from 1964-1966. As Chief, he was instrumental in community development and his accomplishments are still evident today. He was especially proud that members of his family have continued to provide leadership to the First Nations' community. The family would like to thank Dr. Ijaz, the nurses and staff at the Pine Falls General Hospital for their care and support. The family also acknowledges and extends our sincere gratitude to grandson Daniel and his partner Gina for taking such good care of grandpa! Your sacrifice, commitment and love for him will never be forgotten. Pallbearers will be his eight grandchildren. A sacred fire began to burn on Sunday and will continue until Thursday. • Today is your Birthday Dad and I miss you so much, I hope you are in heaven looking down on us, we are living under scary times right now. • Dad, Christmas is approaching so fast and truth be told, I am not in the spirit this year. However our regular traditions will be followed by sitting down with my sons and their children. There will always be an empty space in our hearts without you and Mom. Mom was always so big on the whole family being at your home for our Christmas meal and shared all the blessings with each other. When you passed that tradition broke. One thing we promised to you thou is that me and Dolly will always be together at this time. We all love and miss you so much, I truly hope that you and Mom are looking down on us at this time. Please pray for us now that you are in heaven with our Creator. I love you Dad. - Posted by: Shirley Chrusch (daughter) on: Dec 04, 2019

  • Dad thought of you alot on your birthday this year. I can't believe it has been 6 yrs since you went home to be with our father the Lord. I miss you so much sometimes, I had so much to say before you were called, you taught us well, I'm sorry that I missed some important events in your life but my heart was always with you. I also wish I could have hugged you and kissed your cheek more often and told you that I loved you but I have to believe that you just knew, because you were my dad. - Posted by: Shirley Chrusch (daughter) on: Jan 09, 2014
