OREST SHEWCHUK Peacefully on Thursday, January 17, 2008, at the Portage and District General Hospital, Orest Shewchuk, of Portage, Husband of Eva Shewchuk, passed away at the age of 78 years. Funeral service will be held in the chapel of the Omega Funeral Home on Monday, January 21, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Father Michael Skrumeda officiating. Interment will follow at a later date. Orest was born on April 27, 1929, son of Tekla and John Shewchuk at Garland, MB where he was raised and received his education. He then attended St. Andrews College and the University of Manitoba, where he earned his science degree then moved to Toronto where he trained and became a meteorologist. He served in Germany and France with the RCAF. It was in England that he met his wife. On April 25, 1957 he married Eva Epton and they settled in Churchill. They then lived in Picton, Ontario, Ottawa, Ontario and finally moved to Portage in 1961 where they have since resided. He held the position of Base Meteorologist at Southport until 1986, after 35 years of service with the Federal Government. Orest was a member and Treasurer of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. He was also a member of the Ukrainian Connection, Save The Railway, and the Royal Canadian Legion. He loved sports and was a member of the Koko Platz Recreation Centre, coached hockey, and played badminton as a member of the Portage Badminton Club. He was also part of the retired weather personnel group in Winnipeg. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, golfing, gardening mushroom picking, walking, crossword puzzles, and hunting. Orest was very involved in the bringing in of the Ukrainian Heritage Church at the Forte la Raine Museum. He traveled to Barbados and also made numerous trips to Jessica Lake in the White Shell with family and friends. A highlight of his travels was a trip to Ukraine to meet his family. He played the Banjo and loved music, especially polka party. He was very proud of his grandchildren and his biggest passion was his family. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife of 50 years, Eva. his son Tim ( Janet) of Calgary, grandchildren Briann and Braden, his daughter Dorinda (Murray) Holmes grandchildren Gillian and Fiancé Christian, and Tiffany. Also surviving are his brothers Isadore (Lesia) of Edmonton, Steven (Jeanette) of Cartier, MB, sisters Sylvia (Thad) Snow and Vera (Ray) Chernecki all of Winnipeg, and many nieces, nephews cousins and extended family. Friends may call at the funeral home for visitation prior to the service.
