JOHN FLORIAN GARTNER In the early morning Friday, January 18, 2008 in St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, John Gartner, beloved husband, father and grandfather passed away at the age of 77 years. Besides his wife Cathy, he is survived by his sons, Michael Gartner, Murray Gartner and wife Irene of Winnipeg; daughter, Crystal Bachand and husband Mike of Prince George BC; grandchildren, Emily Gartner, Aidan Gartner, Sean Walls, and Chantel Bachand. John also leaves to mourn his passing sisters, Betty Uhrynchuk, Eleanor Ecker; brothers, Fred Gartner, Joe Gartner, and many in-laws, nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. John was predeceased by his sister Teresa Daly and brother Ed Gartner. John Gartner was born in Markinch Saskatchewan to Michael and Rose Gartner. He grew up on a farm just outside of Melfort Saskatchewan with his parents and six siblings. In his late 20s John moved to Winnipeg, where he met and married Cathy Van de Mosselaer in 1962. This past year they celebrated their 45th anniversary. John was a 40+ year member of the Knights of Columbus St. Ignatius of Loyola council #5808 and was an active member of the community volunteering on boards, he coached hockey and soccer, and was a Scout leader. John loved his grandchildren passionately and was always willing to spend time to play with them no matter the game or activity, even if the rules regularly changed. John loved his wife Cathy, their three children and four grandchildren, together they made up the cornerstone of his life. By his friends he was affectionately referred to as John the barber , a career that he practiced until he was 75 and found hard to give up. He was a gentle, quiet man who was loved by all, and that made him rich beyond measure.... The family would like to thank the Winnipeg Fire and Paramedic services, St. Boniface Hospital Emergency staff, especially ER nurse Jessica, Dr. Wang, and Fr. Roland Lanoie for their care and support through this difficult time. Prayer Services will be held on Monday, January 21, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday January 22, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. both services will be held at St. Ignatius Roman Catholic Church at the corner of Corydon and Stafford St. Winnipeg, MB, Rev.
