ROBIN ALBERT NURSE, M.B., Ch. B. January 13, 1922 - January 19, 2008 Peacefully at home, in the presence of loved ones our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, and Friend passed away at the age of 86, after a long and fulfilling life. Robin will be missed by wife Joan; sons Sean, Andrew, Ian, and Jonathan; daughters-in-law Lori, Dana, Sherah and April; grandchildren Justin, Robin, Alyssa, Baely, Emma, Michael, and Finley. Robin, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, was predeceased by his parents, Dr. Vernon and Anne Nurse, his brothers Dr. Vernon (Jr.), Bernard, Leslie, and Michael. A veteran Sergeant of the Second World War, Robin enlisted as a 17 year old and served until its conclusion. He had many wartime experiences that left an indelible impression on him, making many lifelong bonds of camaraderie and friendship during a terrible time. Robin graduated from the University of Glasgow Medical School, and went on to a fulfilling career practicing general medicine in Scotland, and Saudi Arabia, before immigrating to Canada, where he practiced in Gillam, The Pas, Sussex NB, Winnipeg, Rivers, and Lorette Manitoba. Robin and Joan raised their family in Lorette, where Robin practiced for 18 happy years before retiring in 1997. His life's calling had brought many friends and wonderful experiences into his life, and he will be remembered fondly and missed by all who knew him. The Nurse Family would like to thank all the people that have helped with the comfort of Robin over the last few months. Donations in lieu of flowers can be made in Robin's name to the charity of your choice. A celebration of his life will be held in Robin's honour at Oakbank United Church, 582 Balsam Crescent, on January 24, at 1:00 p.m.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • This man is my namesake, and my grandfather's brother (Michael Nurse). I met him once, at Broomhill farm in Ayrshire, Scotland. Greetings to all my Canadian family, please do visit! - Posted by: Robin McNamara (Great Nephee) on: Mar 22, 2017

  • I met Robin at his parent's home in Glasgow. He was visiting from Canada. I was so impressed by his incredible experiences and his intensive desire and ability to achieve so much education with enthusiastic attitude. Of course he inherited his father's intensive desire to be the absolute best in his medical and all other cultural achievements. Vernon, Robin's brother who also served the country in the services and also suffered some major injury during his medical services to military, devoted a large chunk of his life to the Glasgow community as an exceptional physician. Robin's uncle Laurie also spent many of his later years working in medical employment. My connection to the family is mainly through Leslie, Robin's brother, although I was also closely connected to Dr Vernon Sr. and his wife. Leslie was a known and listed artist in the Scottish School. He was a JD Ferguson prodigy. I was introduced to Leslie (also later known as El Moro after his time spent in Spain) by an artist friend who said I should meet and work with him as I had certain qualities he would be able to help me with in my own art endeavor. I benefitted greatly from his knowledge and became a close friend of most of this great NURSE FAMILY, from Dr Vernon, Robin's dad Dr Vernon Robin's brother Leslie and Leslie"s son Vernon married to Katrina. Other members also but now the list is getting too long. Suffice it to say I have an incredible admiration for this family . I must add that since I live in the USA I have drifted away from my European life unfortunately I did not know of all the people the people who have left us here to continue our life trials and am very sad I have missed my opportunity to visit with them here, so be it I will anticipate a future time. Although it is along time since these people departed from us you can be sure I will never forget them. I know how much Robin was devoted to his "family". I personally respected him so much. Thank you all his family for supporting him in reaching his goals. I stumbled across this obituary while researching other information. Thank you for making it possible to respond, it eases sadness. Gjertrud K. Aney. May all the departed Rest In Peace. - Posted by: gjertrud kolflaath aney (working artist with mentor Leslie Nurse brother to Robin) on: Sep 28, 2013

  • Joan and family. Just to let you know that you are in our thoughts and prayers. We have wonderful memories of you both from Gillam. It was fabulous working with Dr. Nurse. Today I wore the nice pendant that Robin brought me from Scotland and someone commented on how nice it was. I told the story of how I received it from a great Dr. I once worked with. Then I came home and heard of his passing. I know his family will have fabulous memories. Our sympathy goes to you.
