HANS PETER LANGES In the early morning of January 21, 2008, Hans Peter Langes passed from this world at the age of 82 years. Born on May 3, 1925, in Datteln, Germany, to Helene Langes (nee Schwirz) and Peter Langes, Peter grew up with four sisters. After the war, he studied at the School of Architecture in Essen, Germany where he graduated in 1951. That year he came to Canada and settled in Winnipeg, where he resided for the rest of his life. In 1952, he fell in love with Connie Kazakoff, a farm girl from Kamsack, Saskatchewan, and they were married on Boxing Day of that year. They had three children, Heidi, Peter and Jane. Peter's first job in Canada was with Green, Blankstein and Russell, an architectural firm where he remained for 12 years and formed many lasting friendships. In 1964, He opened his own practice, Peter Langes and Associates, which continued until his retirement in 1988. He designed many schools throughout Manitoba and was able to combine his love of flying with his work when he bought a Cessna 172, and often took his family with him to job sites around the province. Peter was actively involved with a number of business and professional organizations throughout his long career. He received the Preservation Award by Heritage Winnipeg for his work on the Winnipeg Law Courts. Peter also designed the family home in Headingley, where they lived for over 40 years. The Witch's Hut in Kildonan Park is another lasting legacy of his design work. Music always played a big part in Peter's life: he maintained a lifelong friendship with the 5 Colibris, a dance band he played with in his youth. He was a member of the Selkirk Music Club for over 30 years and spent many memorable times with his Selkirk friends. The St. Charles Men's Club was another source of friendship for Peter. Peter was also an enthusiastic ham radio operator. He also loved dogs, and leaves behind his faithful friend Tasha. In the early days, fishing trips with the kids and family vacations to Hawaii filled Peter's spare time. The cottage at Patricia Beach was another favourite spot. More recently, he enjoyed spending time with family, especially the grandchildren. Peter will be lovingly remembered by wife, Connie, of 55 years; daughter Heidi (Dan), son Peter (Maggie), daughter Jane and grandchildren, Matthew, Jessica, Jared, Zeb, Julia and great-granddaughter Emily. He is also survived by two sisters, Inge in Germany and Rosemie in Ohio. The family extends their thanks to the nurses at Four South at the Grace Hospital and the Grace Hospice for their care and compassion. Peter was also grateful for the many friends who brightened his last days. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, January 24, 2008, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Charles Parish (320 St. Charles St.) with Fr. Terrance P. McGrath officiating. Reception to follow. Interment to take place at a later date. Flowers gratefully declined. If friends so desire, donations in Peter's memory may be made to the War Amps or the Grace Hospice Memory Garden. Rest in Peace dearly loved husband, father, Opa and brother. Arrangements entrusted to: Chapel Lawn Funeral Home 885-9715
