STEPHEN (STEVE) KAKOWCHYK In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 19, 2008, Steve Kakowchyk passed away peacefully with his wife by his side. Steve will lovingly be remembered by his wife Shirley; sons, Rod (Verna) and Raym; daughters, Sheryl (Sam), and Dalyce (Bob); eight grandchildren, Candace (Jon), Michael (Breann), Andrew, Chris, Brittany, Dwight, Sydney, Dustin, and great-granddaughter Julia as well as his sister Annie, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents William and Sophie Kakowchyk; brother Mike (Frances) and brother-in-law Byron. Steve was born in Dufrost, Manitoba, on January 7, 1924. At an early age, the family relocated to Edrans, Manitoba, where he received his education and then enlisted in the army. He served over seas with the Royal Westminister Regiment, returning to Canada in 1946. Steve then married and farmed in Edrans, Manitoba, until he moved to Winnipeg in 1956. He was employed in the Elevator Industry until he retired in 1987. During his retirement, he enjoyed hunting, photography and cruise vacations. Steve was a loyal 63-year member with the Royal Canadian Legion, and a member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors. On Saturday, January 26, 2008, Steve's funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. in the Silver Heights United Church, 199 Garrioch Avenue (corner of Mount Royal Road and Ness Avenue). For those who wish, additional parking will be available in the Seventh Day Adventist Church parking lot located on Ness Avenue. The family wishes to give a special thank you to the nurses and staff of the Palliative Care Unit at Riverview Hospital, and also Deer Lodge Veterans Hospital Unit T7 for the exceptional care Steve received in his final days. In lieu of flowers, donations in Steve's memory may be made to the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3J 0L3, or a charity of one's choice.
