DR. J.H. (JACK) LINFORD The family of Jack (John) Linford sadly announce his peaceful passing on Sunday, January 27, 2008 at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre with his family at his side. Dad was predeceased by Helen, his wife of 58 years, in 1999. He will be greatly missed by daughter Lorraine Merryl (Willi), son Kenneth (Carol), grandchildren Scott, Shawna (Mike) and Jeffery, as well as great-grandchildren and special family Maureen and Ed Winiarz. Many friends join us in remembering wonderful experiences and conversations with Dad. Dad was born in Norfolk, England in 1912, emigrating with parents Harry and Minnie in 1924. He obtained his higher education at United College and the University of Manitoba, winning many awards of excellence. Working on a dairy farm to earn tuition instilled a lifelong love of the open prairie. In service with the Royal British Navy for much of the Second World War, Dad and Mom were married in Freetown, South Africa in 1940 and spent some time there, enjoying unique experiences. Returning to Canada, he commenced a long, illustrious career with the Manitoba Cancer Institute. Spare evenings and weekends were devoted to Naval Base Chippewa as a Lieutenant Commander; at one point heading up the University Naval Training Division. Dad and Mom enjoyed travelling to various Naval conventions through the United States, forming some very close friendships. Retirement gave Dad countless enjoyable hours at his hobby farm in St. Malo, growing weeds, grass and vegetables (in that order). He also became a volunteer teacher at the Manitoba Youth Centre exposing young minds to science, geography and correct grammar. Dad was a natural teacher and his wonderful sense of humour quickly drew people to him. An avid reader through his life, Dad also enjoyed varied types of music and exposed his lucky family to travel and history as we jaunted through Europe and Greece on various vacations. Our parents discovered Latin American dancing in mid-life and loved to perfect their footwork while enjoying the company of their dance classes, eventually teaching it themselves. Special thanks to Tony Farrer for his friendship with Dad which spanned many years, and to the staff of The Wellington Retirement Home and the Golden Door Geriatric Centre for their wonderful care. A celebration of Dad's life will be held at 3:00 p.m., Thursday, January 31 at Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Avenue, Aubrey Street entrance. To honour Dad's love of all things furry and feathered, donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, R3T 0R3 would be gratefully appreciated. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca
