DAVID THOMAS KNIGHT March 25, 1923 - January 27, 2008 It is with sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our husband, father, grandfather and brother at Concordia Hospital on Sunday, January 27. He leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 55 years, Esther, his children, Randy (Leesa), Terry (Donna), Lori (Paul) and grandchildren, Ryan (Shannon), Jonathan, Erin and Kirsti (Ryan). Dave will also be missed by his siblings, Edith (Bob), Florence (John), Dorothy, Grace (John), Bill (Darlene), Rob (Benna), and sister-in-law Vi, along with his many nieces and nephews. Dave was predeceased by his parents Bill and Ida and his siblings, Edna (Bill), Harry, Evelyn (Gordon), and Isabel (Maurice). Dave was second eldest of a large family, born in Durban, Manitoba. As a young man he served as a tank driver with the Canadian Grenadier Guards Regiment in Europe in the Second World War. On his return home after the war, he took up the trade of plumbing and joined the Plumbers and Pipefitters local 254 in July, 1948. His work took him to various parts of Western Canada and while working in Saskatchewan, he met and later married the love of his life Esther in September, 1952. Dave and Esther settled in East Elmwood, where they lived for 32 years and made many lifelong friends and raised their family. Dave's keen interest in union affairs led him to make a very significant contribution to the trade and he worked his way to his appointment as International Representative for Western Canada in 1972. He served in that capacity until his retirement in 1986. Dave was a fair and compassionate man who had a genuine caring for the plight of others. Dave loved to interact with people and would easily converse with anyone who crossed his path. He enjoyed time spent at East Elmwood sporting events and with the youth groups and on the Executive Council. He also cherished his time spent hunting and fishing with friends and family and had a real love and respect for nature. Dave was most at peace at the family cottage on Lake of the Woods, surrounded by his beloved family. Forever in our hearts, forever in our memories... A celebration of Dave's life will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, February 8 at Peace Lutheran Church at 350 Gilmore Ave. A luncheon will immediately follow the service. Sincere thanks to Dr. Kuegle, Maureen from WRHA, and especially Lottie for her years of loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Peace Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 350 Gilmour Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2G 2B7 or the Alzheimer's Society, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2. Arrangements entrusted to Glen Eden Funeral Home.
