Bernie was born in Winnipeg, MB, on March 5, 1949, and lived there until 1956 when her family moved to San Diego, California. On her return to Winnipeg in 1965, she attended Nelson McIntyre Collegiate and worked as a part-time cook at the Heather Curling Club. Upon graduating, she trained and worked as a hairdresser. After marriage to Robert in 1969, she worked for Dominion Motors and later for Mutual Life Insurance Company. In 1975, she helped her husband build their home in Dugald, MB. Shortly afterwards, Lisa and Kevin were born. She continued as a homemaker for several years before going to work at The Ranch Restaurant in Oakbank, The Upper Crust Bakery, and then at K-Mart.
