Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryREINHOLD MARTIN Reinhold passed away on February 2, 2008 at St. Boniface Hospital. He was born October 24, 1910 in Giroux, Manitoba to Julius and Bertha (Schultz) Martin and, when he was just a small child, his mother died and he went to live with his maternal grandparents (August and Auguste Schultz) at Niverville, Manitoba. When his grandfather died in 1924 and the farm was inherited by his son Herman, Reinhold became virtually a member of his family and remained so throughout his life. Skilled in mechanical repairs, he began a career in 1942 in mechanical engineering at Manitoba Bridge and Iron Works and then gained his apprenticeship in engineering firms in Vancouver and Calgary. After the war, he worked as master mechanic at various gold and metal mines from the Yukon to Rankin Inlet to Chibougamau, PQ. He retired from mine work in 1960 and began a journey which took him around the world. From Central and South America to Africa, Asia, the Far East and Australia, he traveled to over 60 countries often staying at accommodations that were often less than ordinary and often downright challenging. In 1976 he returned to Winnipeg, and, while still taking shorter trips to Russia, Mexico and parts of North America, he made Winnipeg his home. In his spare time, he compiled an extensive family tree which lead him to meet many family members. He also built a number of miniature farm implements like tractors and a threshing machine with full working steam engines. With his keen eye for detail and his vast store of memories, he was a fascinating and engaging, but always modest, story teller. As long as he felt able, he would rent a car and drive out to rural places along less traveled roads in order to enjoy the solitude of nature. He took care of himself in his own home until his recent stay in the hospital and he met the challenges of life with self-reliance and a cheerful disposition. He was predeceased by his eldest sister Elsie and two brothers Albert and Edward. He is survived by his sisters Teenie Zotsman (Winnipeg) and Anne Neilson (Red Deer) and all his siblings' children and grandchildren, many of whom kept in touch with him. He will also be missed by the members of the Schultz family, especially Alma and Lorna who kept in close contact with him. Cremation has taken place.
