EDWARD WILLIAM SHUMILAK April 4, 1913 February 7, 2008 On Thursday, February 7, 2008 in the early afternoon with family at his side, Edward Shumilak passed on to his eternal resting place. Edward leaves to mourn his passing son Nelson (Lita) Shumilak, daughters Charlotte (Arthur) Kowalchuk and Grace (Ian) Rosser. He will also be greatly missed by his granddaughters Nicole (Jason) Stewart and Ashley Kowalchuk as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Helene, six brothers, two sisters and a granddaughter Cammy in 1986. Edward was born and raised in Ladywood, Manitoba. In his youth he enjoyed playing baseball, horseshoes, singing and playing his fiddle especially at barn dances in the country. He was an excellent horseman and spent many summers herding sheep and working as a farm hand in Saskatchewan and Alberta. He was an avid reader and enjoyed listening to classical music. He had a collector's album of all the famous composers. Ed loved being his own boss and farming was the only life for him. Harvest was his favorite time of the year, he was happiest taking the crops off the field. He enjoyed the outdoors especially hunting season in the late fall. He kept fit by walking daily even on the coldest winter days. Ed kept busy splitting wood for the stove and shoveling snow until his 84th birthday. He remained active camping, fishing and attending his granddaughters activities until his stroke in 1997. Edward had been a resident at East Gate Lodge for the past 10 years. The care and compassion he received from the Staff was exceptional. Prayers will be said on Sunday, February 10, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. from Russell Funeral Home, Beausejour, Manitoba.
