MARY FRANCES (PEARL) HICKE (nee COHOON) On a bitterly cold Winnipeg night, January 29, 2008 at Golden Door Personal Care Home, Winnipeg at the age of 85. Pearl liked the adage - Old age is special; God does not give it to everyone and she thought she had lived that gift. Surviving are daughters Pat (Brian) Kobylak, Janice (Larry Zakaluk) Walker, Susan (Ron) Burns; grandchildren Barbara (Les) Chabai, Sarah (Dennis) Konowich, Brian and Shelley Walker, Megan (Jeff Pike) Buhr and Adam Buhr; great-grandchildren Diana, Noah, Travis, Christian and Matthew. Also, her brother Don (Kaye) Cohoon of Canso, nephew Michael ( Mick ) Cohoon of Winnipeg, nieces Rita (Paul) Saunders of Charlottetown, PEI and Sheila (Eddie) Carscadden of Orono, ON as well as extended family and friends. Gone before her was her beloved husband Conrad Connie in 1990. She was also predeceased by son-in-law Daniel Buhr, her parents Gregory and Rita (nee Schrader) Cohoon and brother Bill (and Helen) Cohoon of Borden-Carleton, PEI. Pearl was born in Canso, Nova Scotia, December 5, 1922, and attended nurses' training at St. Martha's, Antigonish, NS and after graduating in 1945 came out to the Prairies with her lifelong friend Pat Hornung (nee Meagher). In 1947 Pearl and Connie were married in Broadview, SK. Upon moving to Winnipeg and after the birth of her family, Pearl worked as an R.N. at St. Boniface and Manitoba Rehabilitation Hospitals. They raised their family in East Kildonan on Melbourne then Trent before moving out to the country in the Ostenfeld area. A few years after Connie died, Pearl moved back to Winnipeg and lived in her condo on Plessis Rd. til last October. She had been a faithful parishioner at St. Alphonsus, E.K. and then Our Lady of Hope, Anola. Pearl was an avid reader and lifelong learner, always keeping up with current events. She enjoyed her needlework and crafts which she generously shared with family and friends. Many happy hours were spent in the boat fishing with Connie, not because she loved fishing but loved the sound of the lapping waves and his companionship. Her family finds comfort in knowing that she is free of suffering and at peace back in his loving arms. A memorial service will be celebrated on Saturday, February 16, 10:00 a.m. at Green Acres Funeral Chapel, Hwy #1 East at Navin Rd., led by Sr. Sheila Madden, RNDM. Cremation has taken place with interment at a later date. In lieu of flowers, Pearl would have been pleased with donations to two of her favourite charities, either The Leprosy Mission Canada 100-100 Mural St., Richmond Hill, ON L4B 1J3 or Mennonite Central Committee, 134 Plaza Drive, Winnipeg, MB R3T 5K9.
