RETIRED SUPERINTENDENT RCMP BRIAN KENNETH VAN NORMAN July 23, 1931 February 5, 2008 After a long and full life, with his family at his side, our beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away on Tuesday, February 5, 2008 at the Deer Lodge Centre at the age of 76 years. Remaining to forever cherish Brian's memory are his loving children, Brenda Van Norman (John), Bonnie Van Norman (Roy), Bob Van Norman (Karen) and Kim Allen (Howard); grandchildren, Daryl, Bev (Chris), Mark, Scott, Jeff, Roberta, Karlee, Brian, Kodi, Trent and Courtney; great-grandchildren, Rogue, Jamie-Lynn, Anneka and Miena; his wife Beverly; brothers, Bob (Janet) and Jack (Marnie); sister Karitas (Bob); as well as numerous nieces, nephews and relatives. He was predeceased by his parents Bob and Jonina Van Norman and his brother David Van Norman. Born in Hamiota, Manitoba in 1931, Brian spent the early years of his life on the family farm. He joined the RCMP in 1951 and his career took him to North Battleford, Lloydminster, Ottawa, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Dauphin and Peace River. Brian retired from the RCMP in Winnipeg in 1985. He then had a short career with Transport Canada. Brian enjoyed golfing, curling and was a member of the Masonic Lodge and St. Andrews Society. He had a great sense of humour and loved to share a good joke or story. Brian loved to have his family gather to share a meal or a swim in the pool. He had many friends over his years of service, many of which he still kept in touch with. The last five years of Brian's life have been spent in the hands of the wonderful and caring staff of the Deer Lodge Hospital. He was always shopping for treats and surprises for the staff and had many friends on every floor. A Celebration of Brian's life will be held on Friday, February 8 at 10:30 a.m. in Deer Lodge Centre, second floor Chapel, 2109 Portage Avenue. In the summer of 2008 a private interment will take place in Regina in the RCMP Cemetery. The family wishes to thank the staff of Deer Lodge, especially 6 east. We grew to appreciate and admire their compassion and skill as palliative care workers. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in Brian's memory to the Deer Lodge Centre, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3J 0L3.
