DR. ANNE SMIGEL B.A., B.Ed. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Anne on February 10, 2008. Following a long, happy, and successful career in education as a classroom teacher, resource teacher, and school principal, Anne had directed her interest toward gardening, travel, painting, and philanthropy. She was the first woman principal in Winnipeg of Ukrainian background, her career as an educator spanned 44 years. Over the years, Anne was actively involved in many service organizations, receiving the Alpha Omega Alumnae Woman of the Year Award, the City of Winnipeg Community Service Award, and the Centennial Medal for Teaching Excellence. Anne received an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Laws from the University of Manitoba in 2004. Anne was a founding member of Altrusa International of Winnipeg, she served as the first Canadian Governor of Altrusa International, District 7 from 1980-1982. Anne was planning and promoting ideas and issues pertaining to education and health with specific projects at the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Holy Family Nursing Home, The Millennium Library, the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, and other literary foundations.Since her retirement Anne has had two Art Exhibitions at Fleet Galleries in Winnipeg. Left to cherish her memory are her nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, cousins, and friends. Prayers will be held on Tuesday, February 12 at 8:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday, February 13 at 10:00 a.m. also at the Chapel with Rev. Fr. Volodymyr Bashutskyy presiding. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Anne's memory to a charity of one's choice. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
