VIOLET ISABELLA SCHOLES (nee GILLIES) Peacefully on February 12, 2008 at Deer Lodge Centre with her daughter by her side, Violet passed away. She is predeceased by her husband Raymond, her daughter Patricia, and her sister, Daphene Dougherty, sister-in-law, Shirley Duffield. Mom was born on January 1, 1921 to Wm. John and Elizabeth (Bailey) Gillies in Winnipeg. In her early years she lived on Powers Street and graduated from St. John's High School. She married Ray in 1942. During the Second World War, they both went overseas, not knowing they would not see each other for four years. Mom volunteered with the St. John's Ambulance Brigade in England caring for the wounded. Her contributions were honoured when recognized as the first lady volunteer to be eligible for Veterans status. After the war, Mom and Dad returned to Winnipeg to start a family and raise their two daughters. She lived in northern Manitoba and Moose Jaw, SK as a result of Dad's years as a pilot. Mom loved her family and is remembered for her great devotion, kindness and compassion for all. Mom was a hard working and resourceful homemaker. She enjoyed gardening and providing wonderful meals. She introduced her family to the love of the outdoors through camping and fishing, enjoying the memories and good times spent in the parks of Canada. Later in life she traveled for winter vacations to Hawaii, Barbados and bus trips across North America and England. She cherished being a lifelong member of St. Bede's Anglican Church where she was a member of the choir and made many good friends. For the last 18 years of her career, she worked in the CSR of Deer Lodge Centre, which is where she spent her final days. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter, Penny and husband Dale Johnston, grandchildren, Robert, Cole, Laura (Curtis) Fedorchuk. Great-grandsons, Chase, Kaden, Cole and her niece, Sheri (David) McClelland. Rarely do you find a person with so much determination to live life to the fullest and a desire to serve her lord and fellow human beings. A special thank you to the staff on T6, Deer Lodge Centre for their care and compassion over the past five years. God bless the care givers. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 23, 2008 at the Church of St. Bede and St. Stephen, 99 Turner Avenue, Winnipeg. A private family interment will be held at St. John's Cathedral Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society, Mom loved her poodles.
