MABEL WHITE It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Mabel White, our mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, at Golden West Centennial Lodge, on Saturday, February 9, 2008, at the age of 90 years. Mabel will be lovingly remembered by her daughters, Lesley, Lynn (Ray); grandsons, Kelly, Karl (Mary Ellen) and Paul (Julia); great-grandchildren, Christopher and Bailey; as well as nieces, nephews and many cousins across Canada. She is the surviving spouse of Jack, who passed away in 1964, and was predeceased by her brothers, Herbert, Richard, Harvey, and sisters, Effie, Thelma and Jean. Mabel was born in Dauphin, Manitoba, on December 10, 1917, and came to Winnipeg as a child with her parents, Ethel and William Lawrence. She married Jack during the war, was widowed in 1964 and remained in Winnipeg for the rest of her life. She was a dedicated gardener, building up and tearing down endlessly for her own satisfaction and the enjoyment of her daughters and their families. Mabel spent many happy hours at both daughters' homes, hatchet in hand, and at the cottage tidying the forest around Shoal Lake. She loved the outdoors, and spent many summers hiking, enjoying plants, birds, and animal life. Mabel was a kind, gentle, loving and giving person, a lady who loved to joke and laugh and who enjoyed life. She was an avid bowler for many years in many different leagues. Mabel loved to dance, finding any excuse to whirl around the floor, especially in ballroom, square and round dancing. She learned to swim at 65 proving that she could do anything she set her mind to. Mabel loved her grandchildren and enjoyed many happy hours with them, always pretending not to spoil them. Words cannot express the loss felt by her family and friends. She was an inspiration to all of us. We will miss her and she will always be in our hearts. Friends and relatives are invited to attend Mabel's service at Golden West Centennial Lodge, 811 School Road, (corner of Ness Avenue), on Thursday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment will follow. The family greatly appreciates the care and compassion given by the staff at Golden West Centennial Lodge during the two years Mom lived with them. Our special thanks to the 4th floor staff whose laughter, good cheer and understanding made her time there so comfortable and happy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mabel's memory to Golden West Centennial Lodge.
