Date of Passing: Feb 18, 2008
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFLORENCE ALEXANDRA OWEN (nee MacMILLAN) 1919 - 2008 In sorrow, the family of Orie - Florence Alexandra (MacMillan) Owen - announces her peaceful passing on February 18, 2008 following eight years of decline attributable to Alzheimer's type dementia. We have mourned each increment of loss of her being during this last leg of her life's journey. Mom was granddaughter to Keewatin pioneer Annie Beaton, daughter to Pearl and Alexander MacMillan, sister to Eleanor, Joyce, Mina and Lois, loving wife to Thomas Freeborn Owen (of London, Ontario) - all deceased. She is survived by her children, Michael Owen (Colleen), Peter Owen (Bonnie), Mary-El Owen and her grandchildren, Kathy, Jon, Kirk, Kim, Thomas and Jennifer and numerous great-grandchildren and her brother-in-law Bob King. Mom was born in Keewatin, Ontario on June 27, 1919 and spent a happy childhood there. She shared a lifelong friendship with Millie (Allan) Smith of Kenora. Mom and her sisters all pursued further education and moved to Toronto. Mom graduated as a Registered Nurse from Toronto East General Hospital. She met Tom while he served with the Royal Canadian Navy in England during the Second World War. They married in Ottawa, the war ended and they moved to London, Ontario where they enjoyed the company of Tom's parents and sisters, Mary Raven (Forbes) and Dorothy Henderson (Jim), who are all deceased, as they all raised their young families. Later, Dad's naval career took them to reside in Quebec City, Dartmouth, HMCS Cornwallis, Vancouver, Halifax, and finally to Winnipeg where Mom and Dad spent their remaining years. Mom and Dad were long time members of St. Peter's Anglican Church. They also enjoyed activities and friendships at Southwood Golf Club and HMCS Chippewa. They took pride in their home on Ash Street and valued their neighbours. Mom cared deeply for friends and family and was strongly motivated to assist whenever needed. Mom restarted her nursing career and ultimately retired in 1979 as Director of Nursing at CPL Poseidon Personal Care Home. Thank you to the team on 1 North at Oakview Place Personal Care Home, to Mary, and to Drs. G. Kalanski and I. Maharaj. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Friday, February 22, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Anglican Church, 799 Elm Street, the corner of Grant and Elm. Orie is to be interred at Lake of the Woods Cemetery at Kenora, Ontario at a later date. Mom, you will remain forever in our hearts. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Orie's memory to Alzheimer's research, Alzheimer's Society, 10-120 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4G2 or to a charity of your choice.
