DR. HENRY HILDEBRAND MD, FRCSC Henry Hildebrand died a few heartbeats short of Valentine's Day on February 13, 2008 at the Vancouver Hospital in the cardiac intensive care unit. He was born March 1, 1931 on the family farm in Niverville, Manitoba, the eighth of 12 children. He had a desire while quite young to become a physician and worked diligently to eventually become a prominent and skilled vascular surgeon in Vancouver from 1966 to 1996. He was highly regarded by his peers and patients as well as many medical students and residents who he had the joy of teaching. Henry was also well known in the hospital for being a snappy dresser. Henry was very involved in many professional and volunteer organizations and received numerous awards and recognition for his work. Henry was not afraid of death and knew that his impending surgery carried a high risk for him. He faced his own death with the integrity and courage befitting a man of his sensibilities and deep faith in God. His loving wife, Hilda, with whom he was so deeply in love, survives him. He is also survived by his children, Lloyd (Jenny), Ralph (Janet) and Sharon (Glenn), and eight grandchildren, Tara (Kyle), Landon (Lindsay), Dallas, Nissa, Lliam, Raelene (Blake), Jacquelyn and David in whom he was very proud and were sources of great joy for him. In turn they admired and loved their father and grandfather. A memorial service was held for him at Bakerview Mennonite Brethren Church in Clearbrook, BC, on Tuesday, February 19, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Vesico-Vaginal Fistula Fund that Henry started in 2002. Donations can be sent to VVF Project, Africa Inland Mission, 1641 Victoria Park Drive, Scarborough, ON, M1R 1P8.
