HARRY LIDSTER ALLEN On Saturday, February 23, 2008 at Fred Douglas Lodge in Winnipeg, MB, Harry Lidster Allen passed away peacefully at the age of 93 years, with his beloved daughter and granddaughter at his side. He is survived by his son, Dr. Robert (Rosemary) Allen of Anthem, Arizona; his daughter, Sandra Forsyth (Ross) of Winnipeg; his grandchildren Michael Allen, Melissa Dolezal, Lynn, Graham, and Clark Forsyth. He also leaves to mourn his passing his brother, Jim Allen. Harry was predeceased by his dear wife, Ethel, of 46 years, who predeceased him in 1984, and his sister, Vera Collyer. Harry was born above his grandparent's bakery, Lidster's Bakery, on the corner of Selkirk Avenue and Main Street in Winnipeg on January 15, 1915. He was the oldest child of John and Charlotte Allen. Harry became a first class stationary engineer, and obtained journeyman papers as an electrician, plumber and in refrigeration. He worked for Winnipeg Cold Storage, Shea's Brewery, and as Chief Engineer of Pelissier's and Labatt's Breweries. Harry served as Chief Petty Officer in the Royal Canadian Navy during the Second World War, on the Canadian Frigate HMCS Grou. He saw action on the dangerous Murmansk Run on the North Atlantic and at D-Day. For over 60 years, he lived on Perth Avenue and was a member of the West Kildonan Branch of the Royal Canadian Legion for 57 years. Harry enjoyed time spent during weekends, summer holidays, and retirement working at the cottage he built for his family at Lester Beach over 50 years ago. He was always willing to help his family and friends. He was interested in music, and valued books and education. Harry was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who was deeply loved and admired by his family. The family would like to extend their thanks to the Fred Douglas Lodge staff for all the care and kindness shown to Harry during his time spent there. Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, February 28 at 2:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. with Rev. Paul Peters-Derry officiating. Interment will follow in Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Harry may be made to The Salvation Army, P.O. Box 8200, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 4W5.
