CELIA MAY ASKEW Peacefully, Celia May Askew of Winnipeg, Manitoba, 80 years old, passed away on Sunday, February 24, 2008 after a difficult struggle with lung cancer. We are very sad that mom had to leave us but are relieved she is no longer in pain and has joined her loving husband Walter. Mom fought a great battle and leaves to mourn her children, Gordon (Michelle) Askew of Regina, Linda (Gerry) LeBlanc of Winnipeg, Eileen (Dr. Steven) Wright of Burnaby, BC and Dr. David (Dr. Carolyn) Askew of Cleveland, Ohio. Mom was born in Beulah, MB and trained as a Psychiatric Nurse working at the Health Sciences Centre for many years. She married Walter, the love of her life and lived in Winnipeg until they retired to Brandon, then on to Victoria. Mom was a talented knitter, sewer and cook. She enjoyed bowling and loved to travel in her later years, but her real joy was family! Her memory will always be cherished by her grandchildren, who were the absolute delight of her life. She leaves to mourn, Candice (Jonathan) Murray, Daniel LeBlanc and girlfriend Melissa, Garrett LeBlanc, Morgan and Reesa Wright, Christopher and Lucas Askew, Lindsey and Rachel Askew, and a special kiss goodbye from great-grandson Liam Murray. Mom is predeceased by her parents and older sister and brother-in-law, Jean (Howard) McDonald formerly of Birtle, MB. We know they are chatting away right now catching up on all the news. Her sisters will sadly miss her, Terry Shelestynski of Victoria, Rene (Bob) Treffry of Brandon, Dorothy (Dave) Bullee of Douglas and brother Jim (Joan) Oswin of St. Marks. There was a lot of love for Aunt May, and all her nieces and nephews in Canada and England will sadly miss her. Special thanks to her extended Winnipeg Family who helped so much when Mom arrived from British Columbia. Thanks to Carol (Don) Crerar, who visited, played cards, told stories and lighted up her days with lots of laughter. Thanks also to Dorothy (Jeff) Lowe and John McDonald (Liz Toner) and Michael and Cynthia for all their visits to Riverview. Also mourning her loss will be her BC Family who loved and cared for her. Mom's travel companion, Penny (Reg) Rogers. Dean (Patty) Shelestynski and their children, Nick and Anne, Karen (Elaine) Treffry. She is also predeceased by her nephew Wayne and brother-in-law Nick Shelestynski. The family is grateful for the palliative care Mom received in British Columbia and Winnipeg. Special thanks to all the nurses who visited her daily and her home care workers who lightened her days. Also special thanks to the compassion and special efforts of her British Columbia doctor, Dr. Keenan, who went above and beyond to ensure Mom could travel from British Columbia to Winnipeg. According to Mom's wishes, cremation will take place and a memorial service will be held in Birtle, Manitoba this summer. More information will follow at a later date.
