JAMES MICHAEL BARRIE CD Sadly we announce the passing of Jim on Sunday, February 24, 2008 at the Victoria General Hospital, at 83 years of age. Left to mourn are Reta, his wife of 61 years; his daughters, Mary-Ann Maurice and Janice Yon; his grandson Rene-Michel Yon and wife Amanda; his brothers, Bill Barrie, Clarence Barrie and wife Helen, and John Barrie; his in-laws, Marg and Doug MacTavish, Floyd and Shirley MacTavish and Kay Grigg, and his many nieces, nephews and friends. Jim spent 29 years in the Canadian Forces most of that time in the R.C.E.M.E. Corp. He spent three years overseas in the Second World War and later in his career spent 18 months as a peacekeeper with the UN on the Gaza Strip. He retired in 1974 with an honorable discharge as a Warrant Officer. Jim and Reta retired to Perth, Ontario, where they had grown up. He was an active member of the Perth Legion, Perth Lawn Bowling, Lombardy Glen Golf Course, and the St. James Anglican Church. Jim went back to work for a few years at the Scissors Plant. When he retired for the second time, Jim and Reta moved to Winnipeg to be closer to their daughters and grandson. Jim continued golfing for several years at local golf courses and became an active member of The Big Sky Model Airplane Club, the Fort Garry Bowling Alley, the Pembina Oldtimers' Recreational Association at the Pembina Curling Club, the Fort Garry Legion #90, and the Church of the Good Shepherd. Together, Jim and Reta enjoyed traveling, visiting friends and relatives, and relaxing by the lake in the summer. Jim enjoyed his daily outing for the newspaper, a good book, his computer games, a fun game of Yahtzee, spoiling Mitzi the cat, and family get-togethers. Many thanks to the doctors, nurses and support staff at the Victoria General Hospital where Jim's asthma made him a frequent visitor in the last few years. Thanks to Dr. Greene and the staff on the 5th floor who were with us through the last few weeks. A special thanks to Dr. R. Hayward, our family physician, whose care and diligence brought Dad through many medical emergencies over the last 20 years. To honour Jim's wishes his body has been donated to the University of Manitoba Medical Department. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. A memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on March 14, 2008 at The Church Of The Good Shepherd, 673 Silverstone Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.
