Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySAMUEL HOCHMAN Surrounded by his loving family, Samuel Hochman passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 2, 2008 at the Seven Oaks Hospital, at the age of 90. Sam was born January 6, 1918 in Rozhischche, Poland. In 1929 he immigrated with his family to Canada. Sam was the son of Jacob and Shifra Hochman, who predeceased him. He is survived by his loving family - his wife Sara, of 58 years; his dear children, Marcy and Barry Schwartz, and Susan and Arnold Permut; cherished grandchildren, Cara and Danny Stoller, Jill and Geoffrey Abraham, Hart Schwartz and Janie and Jeffrey Gilbert; beloved great-grandchildren, Jacob, Josh and Alex Stoller, and Joey Abraham. He is also survived by his sister Rose Epstein and nieces and nephews in Winnipeg, Calgary and Los Angeles. Sam was a respected businessman in Winnipeg, for over 48 years, as owner of Prairie Produce, a poultry processing plant. Although his was a comparatively small operation, he was respected for his integrity by the giants of the industry, in both Canada and the U.S.A. To his employees, he was more a father figure than an employer. In May 1976, Sam was honoured by the Manitoba Egg and Poultry Association of Winnipeg, Manitoba, in recognition of his contribution to the poultry industry of Manitoba. From 1941 through 1945, Sam served in the Canadian Armed Forces. He was stationed in Kingston, Ontario and Prince George, British Columbia. We are all judged on the basis of our personal traits, including our contribution to the community and to the welfare of others. In this respect, Sam was a real mensch, a man of integrity, quietly philanthropic, and never one to brag about himself. Above all else, his family was first and foremost in his life. He was always concerned about the welfare of his girls : Sara, Marcy and Susan. Sam had a special and very close relationship with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We all felt so loved and cherished by Sam, our husband, father, Zaida, and Great-Zaida, and we loved him deeply. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 4 at the Etz Chayim Synagogue, officiated by Rabbi Peretz Weizman, whom we wish to thank. Heartfelt thank you also to the pallbearers, both active and honorary. Active pallbearers were Hart Schwartz, Danny Stoller, Jeffrey Gilbert, Butch Hochman, Benny Hochman, Gerald Rosenby, Corey Shapiro, and Michael Ginsberg. The honorary pallbearers were Ike Permut, Harry Rosenberg, Max Fogel, Oscar Antel, Sidney Soronow, and Jack Buchalter. Special thanks go to the nursing staff of 5th floor, Unit 3, Seven Oaks Hospital, who took such excellent and compassionate care of Sam and his family. Sam's was a life well-lived. He will live in our hearts forever. If desired, donations in Sam's memory may be made to the Sam and Sara Hochman Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, 477-7525 or the Sara Hochman Music Therapy Endowment Fund at the Sharon Home, 586-9781, or to a charity of your choice.
