FREDERICK (JOHN) GALLINGER DALLYN Frederick John Gallinger Dallyn passed away on February 6, 2008. Born on June 19, 1919, John retained the inquisitiveness of his youth and was truly a lifelong learner. A teacher of English and Social Studies at Quamichan Junior High in Duncan, BC, and earlier in his life, a professor of Sociology at Malaspina College in Nanaimo, BC, and the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg. John earned his B.A. at the University of Toronto in 1945 and his Masters Degree at Harvard in Sociology, a relatively new field of research at that time. While at Harvard he studied with Pitirim Sorokin and Talcott Parsons, two historically important sociologists, whose theories about social action, systems and spaces intrigued John very much. John further pursued his study of Sociology at the University of Washington in Seattle. While studying at the University of Toronto, John met Jean Elizabeth McNeel. They were married in 1945 and had three children, Fred (Diane), Margaret (Kim) and Susan (Dennis). John loved his family very much and was proud of his three grandchildren, Dana and Dale Miller and Seth Dallyn (Colleen), and was particularly proud of his great-granddaughter Fiona Dallyn. John loved the outdoors and throughout his life kept active with many activities such as traveling, camping, hiking, sailing, canoeing, beekeeping and gardening. He also enjoyed music, theatre, and reading. He was happy living on Vancouver Island, first in Nanaimo, then in Saltair south of Ladysmith, and later in Duncan. He had many friends at Duncan Manor where he most recently resided, enjoyed gardening at Jubilee Community Garden and was a member of St. Ann's Garden Club at Providence Farm. An insightful man, well known for his generosity, energy and curiosity, John also leaves behind a wide and diverse circle of friends, students, and colleagues. We shall miss him. A celebration of John Dallyn's life will be held in the Chapel at Providence Farm in Duncan on Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at 1:00 p.m. Donations may be made in his name to St. Ann's Garden Club, Providence Farm, 1843 Tzouhalem Road, Duncan, BC V9L 5L6.
