LESLIE RHOADES CARTER May 1, 1924 March 14 2008 Les leaves to celebrate his memory his daughter Lisa Lewis (Ian), brother Dennis, niece Shelagh (Brad) and nephew Richard. Les was pre-deceased in 1995 by June, his beloved wife of 38 years. Les was born in Winnipeg and moved to London, England with the family as a child. Returning to Winnipeg at age sixteen he worked at C.P. Rail. He then served in the Canadian Navy on a corvette destroyer escort ship during the Second World War. Les loved to dance and after the war he joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet, first as a dancer in the corps and ultimately as a principal dancer. He considered his time with the ballet to be his greatest career achievement. Following his dance career he continued a life-long love for the symphony, theatre and ballet. In 1953 Les began to work with CBC Television. His career began in the properties department and culminated as an Assistant Producer. Over the years he was involved in notable programs such as Reach for the Top and 24 Hours . While at CBC he met the love of his life, his wife June and they were married in 1957. Les greatly enjoyed playing the piano and spending time with June at their cottage at Victoria Beach. He was known as Friendly Les to all the neighbours who would talk to him on his daily bike ride. Les and June spent thirty-five wonderful years at V.B. hosting happy hour at their cottage and playing jazz records with all their many friends late into the evenings. Les was also an avid tennis player and was honoured in 2007 with the Victoria Beach Tennis Club volunteer award for his many years of service at all of the tournaments. A surprise party and award presentation was held at Deer Lodge Centre with many friends and family in attendance. We would like to extend special thanks to the many wonderful staff at Deer Lodge Centre who provided Les with loving and compassionate care over the past few years. In accordance with his wishes, no service will be held. Both June and Les loved animals and their homes were always full of dogs and cats. If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
