JOHN EDWIN ELDERS John Elders passed away peacefully in Saanich Peninsula Hospital with his family beside him on March 15, 2008. John (also known by many as Jack) was born on October 4, 1920 in the St. Elmo Apartments on Colony Street, Winnipeg to John Edwin Elders (from Glaisdale, England) and Margaret Davis Elders (from New York City). He received his early education from neighboring schools and later from St. John's Ravenscourt School. He worked for a short time at Eaton's and then in 1941 decided to join up. As he had only 15% eyesight in one eye, he was turned down by the Army and Navy, but was accepted by the Airforce in August, 1941. He was in equipment until the war ended. In 1942, he married Ruth Varley, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Varley of the Bank of Montreal. He then went into real estate and established his own firm. He loved working with people and was well known to be trusted. He and Ruth enjoyed their homes in Ontario and Florida until they moved to Victoria in 1993. He is survived by his wife Ruth; his three daughters, all born in Winnipeg, Susan (Wells), Madeline (Davidson), Elizabeth (Baxter) and grandchildren, Anne and Neil (Davidson) and Sarah (Cormier) and Jill (Baxter). A reception in Jack's honor was held in the clubhouse of Water's Edge in Saanichton, BC on March 20, 2008.
