CATHERINE (KAY) NOVAK Catherine Novak, aged 86 years, beloved mother of Shirley (Ken) Kozier, passed away peacefully on Holy Saturday, March 22, 2008 in Deep River, ON, with her daughter by her side. Catherine was born on January 25, 1922 in Wishart, SK to Joseph and Maria Skolney. In adulthood, she moved to Winnipeg and married John Novak of Ethelbert, MB in 1949. In 1959, they proudly moved with their only child, Shirley, to a new house in East Kildonan. At age 50, Kay obtained her certification as a Nurse Class C and worked for 15 years as a nurse's aide at Holy Family Nursing Home. John and Kay were very active members of the Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, especially operating the Bingo Club and Canteen until John's death in 1989. Kay was a member of the Ukrainian Catholic Women's League for over 45 years and enjoyed participating in the Senior's Group, perogy making group, choir and bowling league at Holy Eucharist. At home, she enjoyed gardening, baking bread and making outstanding perogies, which were much appreciated by her growing family. She was able to remain independent in her home until she happily agreed to live with her daughter in August 2007. Catherine was predeceased by her husband John, parents, Joseph and Maria, brother Nicholas and wife Helen Skolney, brothers, William (Mary), John (Marcia), Russell and Adam, and sister Nettie (in infancy). She is survived by her devoted daughter Shirley and husband Ken Kozier of Deep River, ON, brother Peter (Nettie) Skolney of St. Catharines, ON, sister-in-law Marcia of Toronto, ON, granddaughters, Karen (Steve) Zilinek and Lisa (David) Smorang of Winnipeg, MB and Carolyn (Dan) Wylie of Kemptville, ON, and precious great-grandsons, Matthew Smorang and Andrew Wylie. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Palliative Care Unit of the Deep River and District Hospital, Deep River ON, K0J 1P0, or to the Kidney Foundation or a charity of your choice. Prayers will be said on Tuesday, April 1 at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Eucharist Ukrainian Catholic Church, 505 Watt St. at Munroe Avenue. Funeral Divine Liturgy will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 2 at 10:00 a.m., also at Holy Eucharist with Fr. Michael Winn officiating. Interment will follow at Holy Family Cemetery.
