HAROLD KAMKE Peacefully and unexpectedly at St. Adolphe Personal Care Home on Saturday, April 5, 2008, Harold Kamke passed away at the age of 84. He was predeceased by his parents, Emmanuel (1962) and Emma (1985), his brothers, Arnold (1986), Art (1995), Victor (1997) and Clarence (2001) and sisters-in-law Helen (1995) and Emilie (2003). He is survived by his sister Linda Ryman, his brothers Ben and Lawrence and numerous nieces and nephews. Harold was born in the Village of Libau on March 5, 1924, where he lived on the family farm and spent his free time playing hockey and organizing and playing baseball. His first work experience was running a garage with his brother Vic in Libau in 1950 and 1951. Between the years of 1946 and 1951 Harold also went to work at various bush camps in Ontario during the winter months. After leaving the farm he moved to Toronto where he worked performing maintenance on buses for a short term. He returned to Manitoba in 1956 and settled in Winnipeg where he began his lifelong career as a very talented metal worker. Over the years he worked at various companies, leaving the products of his trade at numerous locations throughout Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. Leisure time interests during these years included a passion for curling and a love of golf. Upon his retirement in 1989 he moved back to Libau and built his home on 80 acres of bush land where he lived until an unfortunate accident on February 25, 2008 placed him in the hospital for three weeks. With the intention of moving to Selkirk when a vacancy became available, Harold was temporarily placed in a Personal Care Home in St. Adolphe, where he briefly resided until his passing. Harold's great stories and colorful jokes will be missed by all. He put a smile on many faces and laughter in many hearts with the likes of hit the ball and drag Harry. Funeral Services will be held at Gilbart's Funeral Home, 309 Eveline St., Selkirk, on Friday, April 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Ron Vert officiating. Viewing will be held one hour prior to the service. Interment will take place at Peace Lutheran Cemetery in Libau. His pallbearers will be David Kamke, Sid Kosack, Dale Kosack, Donald Skrepetz, Barry Shaw and Richard Toposzkiewicz. In lieu of flowers, Harold has requested that donations be made to Cancer Research. Harold's family extends a sincere thanks to the staff of the Selkirk General Hospital and St. Adolphe Personal Care Home for their care of him during his last days.
