Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHILDA TOTTLE (SMYTH) nee WUTTKE It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Hilda Tottle, wife, mother, nana, on April 12, 2008 from complications of Osteoporosis. Hilda will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Douglas, daughter, Barbara Magnusson, grandson, Bradley Magnusson, granddaughter, Cindra Leclerc (Brian), great-grandsons, Marcien, Quillan, Jaeden, and Malachi, son Terry Tottle (Marlene), granddaughters, Jenn Sarna (Jeffrey) Jodi Webb (Brandon) and great-grandchildren Alexandra, William, Signy and Cameron, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. Hilda was born February 3, 1913 in Winnipeg, second child in a family of four. Throughout her life Hilda overcame many hardships. When her father died in 1927 working for hydro at Great Falls Dam, Hilda gave up school at grade nine to help support her family. Married to Joe Smyth, Hilda suffered his untimely death in 1942, leaving her with a small daughter to support. Hilda re-entered the work force and continued to hone her secretarial skills at the TD bank, and the Car Demurrage Bureau. In 1949 she married Douglas and they spent 59 happy years together, 47 of them in the home they built together on Elgin Ave. Soon after the birth of Terry, Hilda again returned to the workforce and one of the highlights of her career was as legal secretary at Nitikman and Nusgart. She completed her career at the Vital Statistics Department, retiring in 1978. In 1983, at the age of 70, Hilda achieved her life long dream of a University Education when she received her B.A. Degree from the University of Winnipeg. Hilda was also very generous with her time, volunteering with Sparling United Church as an active member of group 3, a board member, and church treasurer for many years. She was an active member and treasurer of Triple V's through the YWCA. Hilda also volunteered with Revenue Canada assisting low income families. Hilda was a valued member of the board of directors of Osteoporosis Canada, Manitoba chapter from the time it was formed in 1996, and for her distinguished service she was awarded an honorary seat on the board, which she was proud to hold until her death. The family would like to extend special thanks to the nurses and staff at Calvary Place Personal Care Home for their care and compassion. Celebration of life to be held at 1:30 p.m. on April 29 at Calvary Place Personal Care Home, 1325 Erin St., Rev. Pat Wotton officiating. As per her wishes her body has been donated to science at the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Medicine. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Osteoporosis Canada, Manitoba Chapter, 4-353 Provencher Blvd., Winnipeg, MB, R2H 0G8 or Sparling United Church, 1609 Elgin Ave. W., Winnipeg, MB, R3E 1C4.
