THORA GIETZ (nee OLIVER) September 5, 1918 April 16, 2008 Thora peacefully went to the arms of a loving God in the early morning hours of Wednesday, April 16, 2008 at Meadowood Manor. She was predeceased by a son, Peter David. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Rev. William Gietz, and sons, Nelson (Doris), Wesley (Gloria), Rodney (Andrea) and Clark (Rosie), along with grandchildren, Jason and Stephen, Avery and Corey, Joanna, Allison, and Jonathan, Lisa, Jesse, and Timothy, and great-grandsons, Liam, Ciarron and Deaglan. Born in Lethbridge September 5, 1918, Thora eventually came to Winnipeg Bible Institute, hoping to become a missionary overseas. There she met William, they married in 1943, and her mission turned out to be much closer to home. As a minister's wife, she shared deeply in pastoral duties while at the same time raising four sons. Her work in Canadian Baptist churches led her to many roles in leadership, including service on the board of the Baptist Union of Western Canada. During their years in Kenora, William and Thora acquired a lake property and that, surrounded by nature, became Thora's favourite place. It was a source of retreat and renewal, not only for them, but for many others who are welcomed there. The family is deeply grateful to the staff of Meadowood Manor Nursing Home, especially those on the second floor, for their compassion and care, both physical and spiritual. If Thora could leave one reminder for us who remain, it would likely be this: ...God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. (John 3:16) A memorial service will be held at Willowlake Baptist Church, 45 Willowlake Cres., Winnipeg, MB, R2J 2Z4, on Monday, April 21 at 2:00 p.m. Donations in lieu of flowers: Willowlake Baptist Church, Providence College and Seminary.
