ALAN RANKIN CHURCH 1926 2008 He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend. He passed away peacefully with family by his side at Victoria General Hospital on April 21, 2008 at the age of 81. Born in Carberry, Manitoba, he was predeceased by his parents Dr. Alan and Rena Church, and sisters, Jean, Aileen, Kathryn, and Rena. He is survived by Joyce, his loving wife of 58 years and best friend for 63 years. Also left to cherish his memory are his daughter Janis (Alan) Brackman and son Tom (Sharon), grandchildren, David, Scott, and Megan, and numerous nephews and nieces. Retiring from the City of Winnipeg Department of Weights and Measures in 1984, he touched many lives during his 35-year tenure with the City. After serving with the Canadian Army during the Second World War, he became a member of the Brooklands and Weston Legion Branch #2. While a member of that branch he held several leadership positions including that of a First Vice President and Chairman of the Veterans School Patrol Committee and was honoured with a life membership. Members will remember with fondness his many years as their movie projectionist. A longtime member of St. Thomas Anglican Church, he served for many years on the Vestry. He enjoyed spending his summers with family and friends at their cottage at Lac Lu, Ontario. In the winter, he curled with the Pembina Old Timers and took many trips to Kona, Hawaii with Joyce. The family would like to acknowledge Dr. James Sutherland for his many years of care. In recognition of their assistance and care during the last four years, the family wishes to thank the Doctors and staffs at St. Boniface and Victoria General Hospitals, the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg, Doctor Amir and the staff at the Heart and Stroke Clinic, and the staffs at both the Home Care program and the Department of Veterans Affairs. Cremation has taken place. It was Alan's wish that a private family service be held at St. John's Anglican Cathedral, his final resting place. In lieu of flowers, if family and friends desire, donations in memory of Alan Rankin Church can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200 - 310 Broadway Ave., Winnipeg, MB. R3C 0S6.
