EDNA P. SMITH 1909 2008 An Angel has departed for home. Quietly, asleep, on April 16, at Maples Personal Care Home surrounded by those who lovingly cared for her, Edna Smith (nee MacCallum) left us to visit other friends and family. The suffering was brief, the time for visiting too short. Survived by her son Murray MacCallum, Ottawa, Ontario, nephews, Randy Mitchell, Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and Keith Nicol, Manitoba, and their wives, Cheryl and Shirley respectively, niece by marriage, Betty Simpson, Winnipeg, grand and great-grandnieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Malcolm and Isabella MacCallum, baby daughter Valerie, sisters, Olive (Bill Nicol), Irene (Herbert (Hub) Simpson) of Elmwood and Muriel (Albert (Red) Mitchell) of Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, and baby sister Hazel. Also her second husband Jim (James Hunter) Smith with whom she enjoyed numerous trips across the county as well as to places in the United States. Born in Charleswood, she was raised on a farm in Saskatchewan near Elbow where she drove a racehorse to and from school, summer and winter. The family relocated to Elmwood before 1920. Edna worked for The Hudson Bay Company for a short time when it was still on Main Street South. She commenced working for Canada Safeway at Brandon, Manitoba in August 1932 and retired from that company in July 1974 having worked in numerous stores and finally running the training school and taking care of staffing and store openings. She was known as the Lady in High Heels. A special thanks to Judi Dahlin who made Edna famous for her hair-do and to Betty Simpson who put in many hours visiting with Edna over her later years. A doubly special thanks to the Staff at Maples Personal Care Home who toiled day and night to ensure that Edna enjoyed her closing years. You are loved and sorely missed.
