JOHN NORFOLK EVANS December 2, 1912 - April 22, 2008 The measure of a man is not by what he had but by all he gave - author unknown The Reverend John Norfolk Evans passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at Deer Lodge Hospital. John was 95 years old. Born in Bridlington, England, John immigrated to Canada as a young man. He began his new life as a hired hand on Fishers Farm in Minnedosa, Manitoba. Later John studied theology at St. Johns College and in 1940 he was ordained as an Anglican Priest. John was also a certified teacher. During his early years in Canada, John was an Anglican Church Missionary working in northern communities such as Fort Hope, Mistassini, Cedar Lake, Rupert's House and Norway House. He met his wife of 47 years in Alonsa and the two of them spent many wonderful years working together; she as a Registered Nurse and John as the Anglican Priest and school teacher. Their journey's took them to many aboriginal communities in Northern Quebec, Ontario, Manitoba and out to the northern coast of British Columbia. John was also a member of the Canadian Army during the Second World War, serving overseas. As a gunner in the Army he saw active duty in England and Belgium and was stationed in Germany immediately following the end of the war. John is predeceased by his wife Ruth Ellen Evans (2000) and by his brothers, Tommy and Duncan. He is survived by his loving children, Tanis Evans and Murray Evans and his wonderful grandson, Jordan (12 years). Following the death of his beloved wife in 2000, John moved into the Life Care Centre at the Quest Inn. It is here that he found a quiet happiness in his remaining years, making many friendships and finding a new home. The family is deeply grateful for the love and support he found at the Quest. Most recently, John needed more help and care and again he was blessed to find the compassion and comfort afforded by the staff at Deer Lodge Hospital. John lived a full and treasured life. He was a faithful servant of God and found the best in everyone he met. He will be sadly missed but forever remembered. A memorial service will be held at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, located at the corner of Donald and Graham in Winnipeg on April 28, 2008 at 1:30 p.m. Reverend Henry Falconer will conduct the service. Interment will be held following the service at Saint James Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family gratefully requests donations to the Holy Trinity Anglican Church Mission Fund.
