EDWARD (ED) MICHAEL WASHEN Edward (Ed) Michael Washen, aged 71, quietly passed away at Concordia Place on Thursday, April 24, 2008. Ed is survived by his loving wife, Shirley; children, Eddie (Elsa), Sandra (Mel and family), Linda (Michael), Jeffrey (Allison), and Richard; his two brothers, Lawrence (Anne) and Stephen; and grandchildren, Jennifer, Brook, Madison, Albany, and Brendan; and his niece and nephew, Christine and Michael. Born and raised in Winnipeg Ed lived most of his life with his loving wife, Shirley. In his earlier years Ed enjoyed oil painting, was a great cartoon humourist, and painted toy soldiers. Having his cherished Harley-Davidson he enjoyed the camaraderie of his motorcycle club friends who called themselves the Drifters. Recently Ernie, a life-long friend from Ed's boyhood, and former Drifter, passed away. Ed loved the outdoors at first as a hunter and later simply as a lover of nature. A constant throughout the years was his joy for fishing and keenness for reading political and history books. Sports was Ed's passion especially as a staunch supporter of the Blue Bombers, Winnipeg Jets, and Minnesota Vikings. Ed worked as a property appraiser for the former Metropolitan Government of Greater Winnipeg. Later he was a real estate agent and still later a maintenance engineer, for approximately 20 years, with the Crown Plaza (formerly the Holiday Inn) in downtown Winnipeg. Ed's world was his family and his family was his world. He took enormous pride in his children from both his marriages. He served as a volunteer baseball coach for his son's (Eddie's) and daughter's (Sandra's) teams -- coaching Sandra's team to a city championship. Ed's faith gave him strength during his prolonged and painful illness. We profoundly thank Chaplain John Friesen and Brother Jorge Villegas for their pastoral care with Ed during his final journey in life. Our family extends our deep gratitude to the nurses and staff at Concordia Place Care Centre for their excellent care and loving support. Prayers will be said on Monday, April 28 at 7:00 p.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main Street at Inkster. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, April 29 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, Munroe at Brazier. Ash interment to take place at a later date at Holy Ghost Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, we ask you to consider donating to CancerCare Manitoba or a charity of your choice.
