JAMES CHARLES WELSH It is with great sadness that his family announces the passing of Jim Welsh on April 23, 2008 after a brief and courageous battle with cancer. Jim is survived by his wife of 37 years Louise (Bourgouin), son Ryan, daughter Terra, sister Leone King and husband Wayne, and brother Frank. Jim was born on February 8, 1946 in Whitewood, Saskatchewan and moved to Winnipeg with his family at a young age. His early years of education were completed at Provencher School. He then completed his Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees at the University of Manitoba and went on to earn his Master of Arts degree and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Minnesota. Jim began his teaching career at Gordon Bell High School and in 1973 joined the Faculty of Education at the University of Manitoba. In the course of a career spanning over three decades, Jim touched the lives of countless teachers in the province. He thrived off the energy of his students. His passion for teaching was unwavering. His professional life included involvement and leadership in many departmental, faculty, and university committees, also representing the Faculty of Education on the University Senate. Jim was equally committed to his community. He served on the board of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, was President of the Manta Swim Club, and photographer for the Chemo Savvy Dragon Boat Team. His passion for life is best exemplified by his whole-hearted commitment to his hobbies and to the wide and varied friendships he so enjoyed. His special interests included woodworking, kiting, archery, and especially photography. Jim had a talent for finding something exceptional in each individual and encouraging its flourishment. His favourite expression: Dare to dream . Regardless of his professional and community interests and activities, Jim's overriding love was for his family. Time spent with his wife and children is what he treasured most. Jim took great delight in sharing his boundless pride in his family. The family would like to thank the staff at Riverview 3E Palliative Care for their exceptional care and support. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, April 29, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. at Niakwa Country Club, 620 Niakwa Road. I am a first year education student at the University of Manitoba. Jim was my professor for "Teacher and Technology". Even though I only knew Jim for a short time, he really made an impact. He was a phenomenal teacher -- full of passion, encouragement, inspiration and honesty. To have taught for as many years as he did and still so passionate is incredible. There is much to learn from him. My sincerest condonlences to his family. - Posted by: Heather Westmacott (Acquaintance) on: May 12, 2008
