CHARLES (CHARLIE) MARVIN RAINE Charlie Raine passed away on April 24, 2008 at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, MB at the age of 72 years. Charlie was predeceased by his first wife Joyce in October 1988 after 31 years of marriage; his step-son Reuel Johnson in 1995, and his sister Margaret and brother-in-law Laurie in 2005. Charlie is lovingly remembered by his wife Jean of almost 17 years; two daughters, Sheila and James (Paul, Beth, and Tim) Johnson of Arborg and Julie and Geoff Barth of Burlington, Ontario; his stepchildren, Nathan and Eva Johnson of California, Rebekah Johnson of Massachusetts, Deborah Johnson of California, Rachel Johnson and Dale Conrad of Carman, Cheree Johnson of Arizona, and Naomi and Gary (Carl and Reid) Granke of Oakbank; his brothers and sisters, Wilfred (Cecile), Aileen, Donald (Esther), Lois, and Lloyd (Hazel); brother-in-law Keith; and many nieces and nephews. Charlie was born in Boissevain on February 12, 1936, the youngest child of Wilfred and Martha Raine. After completing Grade 10 at Elgin Consolidated High School in June 1952, Charlie worked as a carpenter until he contracted Polio. He spent the next year in hospital in Winnipeg where he met his first wife, Joyce Peterson and they married in April 1957. After a year convalescing at home, Charlie completed a 10 month course in Junior Accountancy at Manitoba Technical Institute in Winnipeg graduating in 1956. He worked for Strong Scott Limited until November 1958 when he went to work for Investors Group Inc. Charlie worked for three years in the Internal Audit Department before joining the Computer Programming Department where he worked until his retirement in March 1991. He married Jean Johnson in May 1991. Charlie enjoyed working with his hands to make things. While in the house, he made many carpentry projects and had an avid interest in model railroading. Once technology became available, he built a color television and a digital clock that is working to this day. Charlie travelled extensively while his health allowed. After his retirement, Charlie enjoyed his computer and he used his skills to help his church and his friends. He also enjoyed using the computer (via Skype) to keep in touch with his family. Charlie was very involved at Messiah Lutheran Church and his faith community played a large part in his life. The family wishes to thank the staff at St. Boniface Emergency Department and 5B for their compassionate care. The family also wishes to thank Pastor Carol Janke of Messiah Lutheran, Neil Bardal and all our friends and family whose thoughts and prayers have sustained us in this difficult time. A memorial service celebrating Charlie's life will be held on Tuesday, April 29 at 2:00 p.m. at Messiah Lutheran Church, 400 Rouge Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlie's name to the Building Restoration Fund of Messiah Lutheran Church, 400 Rouge Rd., Winnipeg, MB R3K 1K3 or to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 200-310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB R3C 0S6.
