Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALICE MARIE STEWART (nee SKOGBERG) May 9, 1925 - April 29, 2008 Peacefully, after a short illness, Alice passed away at the Grace Hospital with her family by her side. Alice will be sadly missed by her son Donald (Jacqui), grandson Aubrey, and daughter Patricia. Alice was predeceased by her husband, Murray, in 2006 and by her siblings Florence, Carl, and Henry. Alice was born in Estevan, Saskatchewan and lived on the prairies her entire life. She met her husband in Estevan during the 1940s while he worked as a telegraph operator there. After marrying and moving to Swift Current, they eventually settled in Regina where Alice worked in a jewelry store until her son was born. From that point on Alice dedicated her life to raising and caring for her family. In 1971 the family moved to Winnipeg, where they continued to reside. As Murray's job during the 1960s required frequent travel, Alice was functionally a single parent for considerable periods of time. Her energy and creativity in entertaining her children during these times was remarkable. It was during weekly trips to the local bookmobile that Alice indulged her lifelong love of reading, which she has passed on to others in the family. Quietly proud of her Norwegian heritage, Alice spoke little about the hard times she and her family experienced during her childhood years. She chose throughout her life to focus on the positives and play the hand one was dealt. Her qualities of strength, dignity, perseverance, and independence were evident throughout her life in all that she did. Content to stay behind the scenes, she truly was the backbone of her family. Alice's love for her grandson, Aubrey, was immense and he relished being treated like a 'little king' by his grandma. He is deeply saddened by her loss, and has many treasured memories of simple, loving moments to cherish. The kindness and caring shown by the staff at Grace Hospital Emergency and 3 North made Alice's final days as comfortable and meaningful as possible. The support of WRHA Home Care was also invaluable in assisting Alice to maintain her independence. The family acknowledges with gratitude the great work by these dedicated professionals. In keeping with Alice's wishes, a private service and interment will be held at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Grace Hospital Foundation would be appreciated. CHAPEL LAWN 885-9715
