STEPAN CHROL Peacefully with his family by his side, Stepan passed away May 4, 2008 after a determined battle with cancer. Stepan was born October 24, 1927 in selo Holszow, povit Woldawa in Ukraine. Dad or Tato grew up on the family farm where the seeds for his love of the outdoors and gardening were first planted. He pursued his education and finished business college in Ukraine. Tato was a proud member of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and fought for the freedom of his motherland. He worked as a restaurateur in Germany from 1949 until 1953 when he came to Canada and eventually settled in Winnipeg. It was there that he met and married Olga (nee Konarski) on May 21, 1955. Together they had many accomplishments. Tato worked at Ukrainian Voice, Nova Doroha and Central Products and Foods prior to starting their first business Airlies Grocery and then McGregor Grocery Meats where he was affectionately known as Mr. Steve to young and old alike. Tato had a deep and strong faith that sustained him during his life and illness. He had a great love for his family and worked hard for us. He was an avid reader and took great pride is showing off the newest developments in his backyard garden. He always had a twinkle in his eye, a ready smile and a philosophy of life to share. Stepan was predeceased by his parents Fedir and Anastasia, brother Joseph and sister Maria, brother-in-law Paul Gotthard and brother-in-law and sister-in-law John and Sophie Hryciw. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of nearly 53 years Olga; children Zenon (Lori), Taras (Cindy) and Iris; grandchildren Robert, Samantha, Sarah, Steven and T.J.; sister Sophia (Mike) and brother John (Stella); brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law Walter and Luba Konarski and Alex and Bev Turczyn; and numerous nieces and nephews. Evening prayers on Thursday, May 8 at 7:00 p.m., St. Mary the Protectress, 820 Burrows. Funeral Liturgy on Friday, May 9 at 10:00 a.m., also at the church. Interment to follow at Glen Eden.
