Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPETER HAROLD GERBRANDT Peter Gerbrandt died on May 3, 2008 at the age of 62 years at Selkirk, Manitoba. He was born March 27, 1946 to Cornelius and Elsie Gerbrandt of Lowe Farm, Manitoba. He attended school at Steinfeld School and Lowe Farm Collegiate. Together, with his father and brothers, he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He was a good student and a good athlete. In 1964, he was part of the Lowe Farm Lancers basketball team that went on to win the high school championship for the Manitoba rural schools. After high school, Peter enrolled at the University of Manitoba and earned Bachelor's degrees in Physical Education and Education. It was at university that he met his future wife, Bonnie Bronson of Killarney, Manitoba and they were married in 1969. After completing university, Peter began working as a teacher at the high school level for the Lord Selkirk School Division where he was to continue his teaching career for 32 years. While there he dedicated many hours coaching multiple sports. Peter developed both the basketball and volleyball programs winning numerous Provincial Championships and his efforts raised the Athletics Department from rural to urban status. He was the Physical Education Department Head for many years. Peter retired from teaching in 2001. During his retirement years Peter excelled at the Selkirk Duplicate Bridge club. Peter owned a cabin at Linklater Lake in Northern Ontario, where he liked to spend time with his friends. He also enjoyed tennis and golf. For a time, he owned and operated a pizza shop in Selkirk. In 1991 Peter and Bonnie received a welcome addition to their family when their son, Justin, became part of their lives. Peter enjoyed spending time with his son sharing their mutual interest in sports and especially their passion for basketball. Predeceased by his sister Betty, and his parents, Peter is mourned by his son Justin and Justin's mother Bonnie, his brothers John of Vancouver, BC, Irvin (Betty) of Nanton, Alberta, and his sisters Zelma (Dave) Coombs of Russell, Manitoba, Mary (Ray) Hildebrand of Winnipeg, Dorothy (Ken) Froese of Fort St. John, BC and brother-in-law Dave (Sylvia) Froese of Winnipeg. Funeral services to celebrate Peter's life will be held on Friday, May 9 at 4:00 p.m. at the Gilbart Funeral Home, 309 Eveline Street, Selkirk, Manitoba.
