HARRY JAMES CANNON It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Harry James Cannon on May 5, 2008. Harry was predeceased by his wife Iris Cannon in 2002 and he is lovingly remembered by their children, Brian Cannon (Norma), Gail Burfoot (Ken) and Brenda Cannon (Martin). He also leaves behind his precious grandchildren, Corey, Adam, MacKenzie, Kathleen and Vanessa; his siblings, Madeline and Roy as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Dad proudly served his country as a member of the Royal Canadian Navy from 1941 to 1961 and saw active duty during the Second World War. After discharge from the Navy, he was contracted by the Department of National Defense to work as part of a team of professionals charged with testing destroyer escorts. At the end of his contract, Dad brought his family back to Winnipeg where he worked many years at Canada Post, Winnipeg, before transferring to Saint John, New Brunswick as Superintendent of Maintenance, a position from which he retired in 1981. His diverse worklife allowed the family to live in many parts of Canada, an experience which greatly enriched their lives. Born and raised in Winnipeg, Dad returned in retirement to the City where his life began, enjoying the company of both his children and grandchildren. He and Iris, his wife of 59 years, happily vacationed in various parts of the world. He had a special place in his heart, however, for his beloved cottage located at Whitesands Estates on Lake Winnipeg. Dad enjoyed being a resident of River East Personal Care Home, where he acted as the President of the Elder Association. Though he missed his home on Brewster Bay, he adapted well to his new home, surrounding himself with new friends and exciting experiences. The family expresses its sincere appreciation to the staff of River East Personal Care Home for their caring attention to both our Mom and Dad in the last days of their lives. Dad's life will be celebrated at a memorial service Monday, May 12, at 2:00 p.m. at Kildonan Community Church, 2373 Main St. A private family interment will be held prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 200-6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. We will all miss his dry wit and special sense of humour. We love you. Until we meet again! Iris - HIDE!! Here comes Harry!!' Klassen Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements, 338-0331.
