MARTHA SHAW (nee HOEPPNER) 1926 - 2008 It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved mother and grandmother Martha at her residence on May 6, 2008 at the age of 81. Martha was born on July 20, 1926 in Morden, Manitoba and was the youngest in a large family. She will be lovingly remembered by her son Chris Shaw and grand-daughters Devon and Brittany in Stratford, Ontario, and by her daughter Bev Shaw and son-in-law Yuri Korchynski and granddaughters Nali and Lasha in Winnipeg. Martha is survived by her brother Ben, sister-in-law Mary and many nieces and nephews. She leaves behind her dear companions Pauline Marshall, Olive Quanstrom and many friends in the community. Martha was predeceased by her loving husband Clare in 1992. Martha attended school in Morden. She worked at the Sanatorium in Ninette and subsequently trained as a nurse with the Grey Nuns at St. Boniface Hospital. Clare and Martha were married on June 26, 1954 and travelled to Minneapolis for their honeymoon. Martha graduated as a nurse in 1955 and spent most of her nursing career in the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat ward at St. Boniface Hospital. Martha belonged to Rosedale United Church, now called Churchill Park United Church. Martha and Clare sang in the choir for many years. She appreciated music and enjoyed attending concerts and the ballet. Family and friends were important to Martha. She kept in touch by writing letters and visiting on the phone. Martha loved to send and receive letters and celebrated everyone's birthday with a card and a note. She enjoyed being outside and was always eager to go for a drive in the country. Martha cherished memories of family camping trips to the Rockies. She was very fond of gardening, especially flowers. Her other hobbies included sewing, crocheting, reading and listening to the radio. After retirement, Martha kept busy with activities such as bowling at Park Alleys, singing in the Glee Club at the Fort Rouge Leisure Centre and meeting friends for lunch. According to her wishes, Martha's body has been donated for medical research. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at Churchill Park United Church, 525 Beresford Ave., Winnipeg on Monday, June 16 at 2:00 p.m. (204) 452-8561. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Martha can be made to the Riverview Health Centre, One Morley Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4.
